But the "best mod you can make to your mini" is a bit much ....
You MUST be in need of more mods ...
When a shift **** becomes "the best mod you can make" to any vehicle, it's time for me to get a new hobby or a new car...
I'm sure the people who spent the money on a pricey shift **** feel that it's value is justified and are quite happy with it. Personally, I don't like the cold metal/hot metal feel when the temperatures are extreme. So even though I think they are nicely crafted works of art, that still rules out a Whalen for me (as well as some other people) as an option.

+1 to Dan00Hawk
So true. That incredibly heavy, burning, freezing, expensive Whalen **** is not my cup of tea. tyvm
Certainly not the best mod I could make to my MCS. The best mod is tightening the nut behind the wheel. That, and the "LightInSight". Makes seeing traffic lights so much easier for the taller drivers. No more stiff necks trying to see the light.

I use a stainless steel adaptor that Doug Whalen makes for his pool ball *****. However, I silver solder (1400 F) a brass cap on the brass insert to protect the wood.
I've made a variety of shapes from the classic to ergonomic experimental (inspired by Le Mans shift handles).

I find this shape particularly comfortable for quick shifting. You don't have to pivot your wrist from its position on the wheel, and the barrel taper fits the hand well.

Every year I'm basically guaranteed 2 weeks of single digits, not to mention at least month of over 90F ambient temps, which means in car temps are easily @ 130-150F, a piece of metal in the sun at those temps WILL burn, heck I've been burned by the seatbelt clip as I fasten it at those temps.

I cringe for the day that comes happening to me.

So my wife got a Whalen for her Cabrio:hot in the summer, cold in the winter. So I bought her a MINI sock for $15 at AMVIV.I bought a MOMO,cut the shifter down 2",installation bringing the **** down shorter than stock. Two weeks later,my wife bought a MOMO.We now have a wider choice of ***** if we ever decide to change,BUT we'd have to buy new shifters to go back to the stock/Whalen pop-on design!
If any of you want to spring for one of the over priced *****, I will take some of the sting out of it by buying your stock 6 speed 2003 (or whatever years fit) ****. The one I have doesn't have the shift pattern in the top, and I happen to like that. If there are no takers I guess I'll have to go to a dealer. I don't know if mine is aftermarket or not. I have only had it a week. I also need a steering wheel cover, bit it looks like to stay stock I would have to buy the whole thing. Guess it's off to Wally World.
