What is this?

Is it a rain sensor, temp sensor? I don't have the rain sensing option.

hmm. i always assumed it was a light sensor to kick on your headlights when it gets dark. so the auto AC doesnt work off a thermostat?

The temp sensors are on the bottom left/right of the Auto AC panel. The UV sensor is there to compensate for when the sun is shining brightly - the temp sensed may not be high, but it will feel warmer because of the sun, so the system compensates.
The UV sensor is called out in a little pamphlet (10 MINI idosyncracies, IIRC) in your owners manual package.

i always thought it had something to do with windshield wipers when the intervals are on delay. It would wipe once, stop, three times in a row, stop, back to one. Or maybe i'm just :impatient

The AutoWipers sensor is at the top of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror - there's a dark rectangle on the glass that the sensor 'lives in'.

Did you just say what I think you said?

Yeah, it's that, or the UV sensor.

I don't think so. I can play with it all day long, but my MINI's supercharger only screams when I pound on the gas pedal.

For the auto-dimming, that senses when there are lights in your mirror so that it dims appropriately.

It's actually a GPS sensor so "They" can track you. Cover it with a piece of aluminum foil, that way "They" won't know where you are and how fast your going.

Actually, "they" track you via the antenna bundled in the rear wiring along the right rear panel. Go ahead and look behind that cubby in the boot on the right... It's there.....

I thought that was the audio bug. I hate when "They" do that.

I'm almost positive that I read in the owners manual or one of the books with the manual that it is an indicator light for the factory alarm system....I guess to blink when the alarm is set? I don't have an alarm on mine, so mine is just a black dot....not red colored lens like appears in the picture in the first post.

Again, just stating that from my memory...which has proven to be unreliable at time in the past .

I have an after market alarm system...

and that's where the light is. It turns solid blue if it's not activated and blinks when it is...

Nope. The alarm light on the R53 is on the wiper stalk ('02-04) or the turn stalk ('05-06). But thanks for playing.

Ah...see! I told you that my memory was not at all reliable!

It's the UV sensor for the AC just like someone stated above.

From the Owner's Lounge...
