Anybody have any problems or suggestions when taking my MINI to a lube shop?

Rather not over pay for my dealer to do it and take all day doing it.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, Cooperman is right, if you don't want to overpay, than don't take it to a local oil and lube joint! Why pay for something you don't have to pay for

It's free, it's free, it's free!!!!!
Take it to the dealer, if your service interval indicator is within 100 miles of required service. If you want to do a change outside of the FREE schedule, then ask your dealer how much it will cost. I saw prices of $50 for an out of schedule change, which is reasonable in my view.

I had mine done at 4K by the dealer... but i brought my own oil.

My Mini Service Dept changed the oil using the Amsoil I provided and charged me like $31 (for the service plus the new filter). An oil change where they provide the oil (MINI/mobil1) costs $83. You can do the math. MINI oil is about $10/quart!

I've been thinking about doing an oil change at 5,000 miles. Where did you buy your AMSOIL? And what specifically did you purchase, and how much of it (5 quarts?)?

Thanks!

yep, i'm pretty sure the scheduled maintenances are free for the first 3-4 years, including oil change. my question is...the mini computer tells you when it's time to service your mini. now i know mine tells me that 10,000 is the first one. and i know i've read stuff on here about whether or not to do the oil change earlier or follow the computer schedule, which is every 10,000 or 15,000. and i know the synthetic oil like amsoil is supposed to last longer than the usual 3000-3500 miles. but...what is the ideal time to do an oil change? i know this is opening a can of worms, but i just gotta know cause i'm coming up to 5000 sometime this month.

In general if you wish to change oil early then about 5000 miles is what RandyBMC recommends. Your choice to do it at that time or wait until the 10-11K mark and follow the dealer's recommendation for oil change which is covered.
If you do the early change then you pay for it. The filter is about $9 and the synthetic oil is about $4-5 per quart x 5. The 36mm socket is about $5 and the long arm rachet wrench is about $20 at home depot. I was going to do my oil change but I covered it all up with my tower brace bar! OOPs!

Hello, again,
thanks for the input.
I took it to my dealer, yep...free!!...didn't remember them telling me that. Its good thru the warranty period.
My service guy said 10,000mi is right for the oil change. Waste of money doing it early. Said he'd see me in another 9000 miles.
I remember Consumer Reports magazine doing a study on the 3000 mile recommended oil change guideline everyone had...said it was bogus....just trying to get your money more frequently.

I love my MINI!!

That's right baby, I tell prople to change when they are comfortable but you can see two analysis on my site where I ran the oil at extended intervals. I did the analysis to demonstrate how good our oil really is and what kind of wear is actually occuring.

As far as the 3000 mile scam, read this article from Lubes 'N' Greases:
http://www.syntheticwarehouse.com/ar..._the_month.htm

I love my MINI to!! So should you!

Ches (yes, that's my name!)
