Extended warranty or service plan

Can anyone explain to me in simple terms the difference between the extended warranty and extended service (repair)? The guy at Mini of South Atlanta said he was running a special for $1600. However, when I mentioned the clutch, he said that is never covered in a 'extended' agreement. I'm just confused now. I plan to keep my 06 Mini for a very long time... (and yes, the fact that the clutch randomly makes a clunk noise could be a reason for thinking of extending either the warranty or service (repair) plan...
Thanks!

extended

there is an extended maintenance plan with goes up to 6 years, 100,000 miles (standard is 3/36) and covers all the maintenance that is detailed in your service manual, every 15,000 miles; mostly oil changes, air filters, coolant, brake fluid, breaks. i understand from my dealer that the 100,000 miles spark plugs and o2 sensor listed in the maintenance plan is not included by mini. i have a posted a detailed list of cost comparisons elsewhere.the price is around $1300 plus tax.i haven;t look into an extended warranty yet (standard is 4 years, 50000 miles). however, my dealer says only one clutch is covered under 3/36, a 2nd one would be called abuse, misuse, and not claimable. archive search for extended warranty

We bought the extended maintenance for our '05 MCSc from our local dealer, after some haggling, for $1395. As others mentioned, it extends the dealer service out to 6 years / 100K miles from original purchase date. It does include clutch. There's another active thread around here that includes a scan of the agreement, plus links to a dealer who will sell the contract for $1395.

We're pretty confident we'll need a new clutch within the next 3 years, and service from local dealer has been excellent, so for $1395 it seemed a good deal.

Extended warranty is a different, more expensive thing. Car warranty is 4 year / 50K so we have a year to think on that one...

Confused. Emailed Miniusa about this and here's the email I got back.

While MINI doesn't offer an extended warranty, some MINI dealers offer one through a third party. You'll want to speak to your MINI sales advisor for more information. For those vehicles covered by Full Maintenance for 36 months/36,000 miles, MINI does offer the possibility to upgrade to Full Maintenance for 48 months/50,000 miles. This upgrade can be purchased through your authorized MINI dealer during the first 36 months or 36,000 miles of ownership, whichever occurs first. Your dealer will have the details. Please note, these programs are subject to change.

D'oh! I try to add clarity and end up confusing things more. We bought the EXTENDED SERVICE for $1395, just before we hit 36K miles. This required a read of our key (to confirm mileage), and extends factory service to 6 years / 100K miles. It DOES include brakes and clutch.

We were also offered a third-party extended warranty that specifically excludes the cabrio roof ... it was offered for around $2800; we did not get it.

Sorry 'bout that ... I'll edit my original post.

maintenance vs warranty

on the mini website, the terminology is:

Full Maintenance (3/36) - oil changes, etc...ergo Extended Maintenance
Mini Passenger Car Limited Warranty (4/50) - something breaks..

Recommended Maintenance is listed in your service book (i forget the name of the booklet, and i don't have it at work), when the maintenance is performed, that is the "service".

1300 is a good deal for the MINI extended service agreement. I talked Mini of SF who is asking $2175.

Hmm.. Let me know your dealer was cause I will definately buy it for 1,300 vs 2k.

Thanks In Advanced
