I am a new MINI owner now (used MINI) and have noticed that the power steering at a stop growls and whines quite a bit. I have not been arround a lot of other MINI's in the past to know if this is normal or if the pump is going bad.

At speed I don't hear it but that isn't to say that it doesn't exist

 

This is normal. Mini's use an electric pump for the power steering. That is what you are hearing.
