>>Don't know if this counts but twice in a week, I've been called a *** while driving my Mini.
>>
>>First time was by a bunch of highschool kids in an Oldsmobile. I was parked and walking to a store, they saw me on the road earlier (I saw them too) and as they drove by me someone in the car yelled ***. I didn't even flinch. Just kept on going.
>>
>>Second time I was at a stop light when a, what looked like a beat up decommissioned former Chevy Caprice taxi, driven by a few more high school age Mexicans (sorry, best way to tell the story) yelled ***. I looked over and saw who they were and what they were driving and just ignored it.
>>
>>Anyway, nothing wrong with being gay but I'm not. Best way to deal with that stuff is to just pretend you didn't even hear it and ignore it. Especially in my case when I would have been outnumbered.
>>
>>I chalk it up to jealousy and stupidity. Nothing more, nothing less.

I usually blow them kisses when I get that response....

You may be on to something here..... With all the anti-SUV media rhetoric, perhaps they see the MINI as the ultimate manifestation of that sentiment.... And, I think more people are aware of "the SUV backlash starts here" advertisement than you realize. MINIUSA's add campaign wasn't high-budget, but it was high-profile.

However, none of that excuses the rude, crude, dangerous, and sometimes criminal behavior.

Let's hope, as more MINIs are sold and "MINI Sightings" become more commomplace, this phenomenon will subside.

I just find it amazing that this MINI Hating phenomenon exists at all. I have never personally experienced it...... People look, point, smile, ogle, give thumbs up, compliment....etc. Hard to believe there are those out there that would waste the energy to be negative about something as silly as a cute little car.......

(I can say it's cute......just don't let anyone else tell me my car is cute! If you do, I'll make you take a ride.....after which you will never use the word "cute" to describe it again!!!!!)

I find it fascinating that we can spend 2 pages trying to figure out why buttheads behave like buttheads. You know, idiots generally don't have to think hard about the rationalization for their idiotic behavior. And, that, btw, is basically the point.

A car like the MINI is going to get a more of a reaction. With the good comments we are accustomed to getting, there are going to be a few (very few) bad. The MINI is cool and it's not for everybody, which is sort of the point of getting one.

If you read some of the threads on MINI2, it is a lot worse in the UK, so MichaelD's blame American society theory does not hold a lot of water IMHO.

If I wanted a car that generated no reaction, there are many choices out there. When we get cars that attract attention, we have to take the good with the bad.

Most of the dumb rednecks who have attitudes about the MINI would find something else to ***** about if it was not the MINI!

For what it's worth, I've gotten 10X as many compliments as derisive comments. I think this is a good thing. Not everyone is going to like it, that's just reality. My brother doesn't like mine, for example. I don't like his Silverado. My point, though (and I do have one), is that if there are 10x as many people that like the car and are willing to say it than there are people that hate the car and are willing to say it, we're in pretty good shape.

This is true, it's not the car because for the most part...it brings smiles to people's faces. It's just certain individuals haven't attended their anger management classes.

i agree with everyone, ive been posting on MCO regarding mini haters for quite some time now and from my 8months of owning the mini I must say that it does exist. Yes, people dont know how to respond to the car but they insist on endangering me as a driver. On a regular basis I get tailgated by semi trucks, SUV's, you name it. Ive gotten a really great response from most people but on the road its very scary.

>Sadly, the country that pioneered democracy, individuality and opportunity for all, has become a nation of OLD FARTS who feel it necessary to try to crush anyone who isn't exactly like themselves. THIS is what vandalized MINI owners are dealing with.<

Watch the old fart stuff....This old fart's MINI is on order and I love all sorts of cars, especially the unusual ones. I do admit I want to barf when I see a Pontiac Aztec but I certainly don't want to harm the driver or the car. Old is not the problem.

It is also kinda fun to pretend you didn't hear what they said and just smile and wave innocently! They usually feel stupid and don't know what to do.

That reminds me of a commercial... Guy calls wife and says "me and the guys are going to hang out, drink beer... and yeah, eat red meat!"

Wife: "You said the word 'cute' again, didn't you."

I had some jerk yelling things at me out of the window of his car with a beer in his hand.........guess you have to concider the source.

Some people assume it to be a gay car, or something I guess. I try not to figure out the idiots of the world.

I hope as well the repairs go well.

OK now guy's..

I think you're reading in to an incidence or two as some sort of a plague or non democratic movement of rabid SUV/Truck owners...A couple of years ago I owned a Beetle Turbo so I went on some of the VW-Beetle boards and guess
what people hated the Beetle beacuse..you pick..... It was CUTE...You where GAY if you drove one...It was a COPY of the old one....It was GERMAN...How can you have a FLOWER in your car...It was not AMERICAN...ETC..ETC..ETC
it's a fun topic but after over a year owning a total of 4 Minis not a scratch but a lot of thumbs up friendly faces, people talking to you..What the hell if I wasn't married I could have gotten laid many times over. You just can't beat it Mini owner ship does not suck so don't fall in to this negative paranoia. Go out looka at that fantastic car in you'r drive way
do you feel the tingle up your spine just thinking about a fun drive on the coast or some back road..Bottom line is no one is going to hate you or scratch that baby of yours.

Happy Motoring

Following your "negative paranoia" theory, M7, I think it just really gets people's knickers in a wad to see people who AREN'T as scared of their environment as they themselves are. I imagine the highways' Durango drivers seeing me motoring along in my MINI and thinking; "S**t! Maybe this was a bit excessive--now where's the nearest gas station?"

I dont think it is so much a truck/suv thing either. All of my cars have been ruined in some way or form and I cant understand why. I fear everytime I park our MCS. I have a Mercedes wich got an egg thrown at and in the morning saw the paint start to crackle where the egg hit. I have a new F250 that my wife drove to the mall and came back with a key stroke going right down the door. The only thing I can think of since we do not create enemies is that because I take pride in my vehicles. Keep them clean and new looking people want to destroy what's nice. Pathetic isnt it?

I don't think people hate MINIs specifically. I think this is all related to jealousy and evny with a dash of low I.Q.

Guys in junkers will call you a ***, because they envy your new car. The model of your car may contribute, but there are probably several other makes and models that would draw the same reaction.

The guy with the beer can is probably drunk, angry, and out of a job. You've got a new MINI, so you get yelled at.

The folks in the SUVs (some of them) are probably afraid that you're having more fun than they are. So you get some flack.

And then there are folks who will never amount to anything, or have anything of value and blame the rest of the world for their situation. So, if you've got something, that makes it your fault that they don't. These are the bozos that will key your door, or toss a cigarette through your sun roof.

I think the percentages on all the above are fairly small, but not so small that you don't have to deal with it from time to time. All you can do is feel sorry for most of these folks.

I totally agree! People are crazy and hate something nice that is not theirs!
