I have a cooper 2006 so cant speak for all models. Push the rear top shelf toward the window. A little space is now available. Use a coathanger and bend just the tip of one end like a hook. Then insert through the small space and hook the latch on the back of the seat and pull up.. After a few tries I could get it open everytime. Might even custom design a tool for this.
or you could just leave the privacy shelf at home. then it's real easy to drop the seat...
as for the Plan B, that shelf isn't very strong. If it were an emergency, I'd just give it an elbow drop than mess around with a coat hanger. And who the hell keeps a metal coathanger in the car anyways??

So...you carry a coat hanger in your car? Or, do you have to get out of the back seat, go back in the house, grab a coat hanger, go back to the backseat and then hook the latch?
Seems to be easier just to get out of the car and go to the back .
why would you want to do this? why not just get out and open it the normal way?
I, for one, find myself on a regular basis switching on the cruise control, steering with my left toes and stretching back and using that coat hanger to get at a cold one from the cooler in the boot, all while motoring down the interstate. Gotta be an easier way.

see new solution above this reply and personally i dont want an umbrella in the front interior of my car smelling up the interior. Where I live it rains and it rains alot. any of you would understand having access to the boot from the inside quite clearly. You would be soaked by the time you got out and opened the boot and then popped the umbrella.
So, I assume you crawl between the seats. I would sure hope so, cause the other option of you getting out, moving the seat forward, getting in back, closing the door...... would seem rather stupid....
or in my case if my school stuff is inside my boot and i cant get it out
but that is a good thing. who wants text books anyhow. anyways you might find the urge to grab a cold one and it just so happens to be in the boot. your happy passenger can solve that one for you. lol
its a tough crowd but none of them actually solved my task. like anyone would keep an umbrella where i live in the front seat. reek city
What do you do if it's raining when you are getting in the car? Get in the drivers seat first and go through the same contortions to put the wet umbrella in the boot?
>> This is silly. It's only water and the time it takes to use a coat hanger and go through all the reaching and twisting you could have opened the boot 3 times. What do you mean by A COLD ONE. Are you suggesting drinking Beer while driving?
