VERY scary moment

As I'm driving on teh highway today a truck about two cars in front of me has its tread seperate, and before i know it the tread is lying in front of me and am forced to run over it. Right now I'm very happy how my car took it from a drivers stand point, where literally except for the fact the car was pushed up by the tread height that exceeded the cars ground clearance, full control was maintained and at no point did I feel in danger, but I can say many other low cars probably would have been sent flying into another lane from the commotion of running voer this tread. In fact the car took it so well i gave a requisite "OH F***" but actually was planning on continuing to go until i heard soem scraping and began to think that the fact the car manged to lift up couldnt have been good. So i decided to check things out about a mile past the incident.

Unfortunately, my whole front splitter, and much of the protective plastic under the engine and transmission was lost, I'm not sure how intact the whol front bumper is, and it appears a box (assuming its a sheild to prevent fires) over the cat was also torn off. I also think the commotion may have loosened a spark plug a little, because at one point when i was at a light waiting the car began running rough, much like if a plug had lost its charge. I want to go tighten them, but with this, a just repaired 100 some odd dollar dent, and a recent keying im afraid ill somehow manage to screw up the simple task of tightening a plug and just be in real deep *****. Fortunately my dealer is a five minute drive away.

Really i just wanted to share mine and my cars bad day, but commemorate the stableness of the MINI in tackling such a large object in the urban jungle.

Oh yeah another negative; since it took me a mile to think "maybe i should pull over to just double check nothing is wrong" i lost the truck that lost its tread so here comes another out of pocket expense.

Your insurance should cover this.

yes it should, but with a grand deductible, and being stuck under my fathers insurance policy who does not want to use insurance since he apparently gets a large discount form his insurance form not having to call on them for 5 years insurance seems pretty out of the question.

Personally im really not expecting more than 800 in damages

Tire tread coming off truck in front of you = moving hazard = covered under your COMPREHENSIVE insurance - not collision - shouldn't impact your dad's rates... if it does he should get another insurance company anyway...

Often the comp deductible is less too-it's worth checking into, this might be more expensive than you feared.

Insurance will cover this. Do not in any way hint that the tire carcass was just laying there, it was definitely ejected by the truck and tossed into your lane. Therein lies the difference. The object must be in motion for the claim to be valid. If the insurance company has any cause to think that the tire carcass was sitting in your lane, even for a brief moment, they can say that it was avoidable and deny coverage.

THAT is so true, happened to me when i was on my way back from Indiana to NYC on I-80 in Ohio, i was near the back end of a rig on his left side and as i was on my way to pass him his tire blew!
I was SOO freaked out, I swerved a little and actually ducked (that sounds bad right now).
One chunk hit the top of my hood scoop and dented it while also managing to pop it out and scuff it at the same time
I pulled off to check out the damage and she was okay cept for the scoop

I swear things like this always happen to me when I go to Indiana

yeah damage was worse than expected; radiator mount was broken too. My dad REALLY does not want to use insurance i still dont understand why, somethign with switching to an umbrella policy soon. regardless it was 1400 and after deciding my rocker panel damage was not worth replacing the whole panel since the damage is underneath, and has no performance effect, and no aesthetic effect unless under the car; came down to about 1250.

its just been a rough few weeks, and more ***** just happened today that i will probably go to the rant topic to rant about

with statefarm, even one car collision you should be able to collect up to
$500 (given that your deductible is less than that) to compensate for
some of the loss without increasing your premimum.

i would definitely talk to your agent about it. even if is a few hundred
bucks you're still better off. even report it as a hit and run (?).

In IL its Damage to Vehicle, for it to be a hit and run both vehicles have to make contact, one the tire shreds everyhting coming off is tire debris i.e. no longer part of the truck hence you cant get an accident report just a regular police report.

How about this. Not to top you or anything.

Pulled into an expressway....way in front of a tractor trailer...plenty of time to accelerate.............06 Cabrio mcs with automatic triptronic transmission.
Car flat died right in the middle of acceleration. Something to do with the accelerator in the computer. Tractor trailer was able to stop without rear-ending me and I was still already two lanes over. Car limped over in idle to the shoulder and two lanes of traffic stopped behind me to let me go. Everyone in both lanes was able to stop from normal highway speeds in order for me to get off the road. Talk about a miracle. I'm glad you survived yours with only minor insurance worries. Last time I came onto a road hazard like that I was on a motorcycle and fell off. No more motorcycles for me says the family. Thank goodness you are ok. LIke my mother says, if it is lost and it doesn't have a soul it doesn't matter.
