Oh this is just fantastic!

So I am laying in bed this morning (actually it was about 11am) and I heard my roommate get ready to leave for work. I asked him if he wanted me to move my MCS so he could move his truck, but he said he could just pull forward and back around it. So I hear his truck start. 5 minutes later, I hear an explosion. I am wondering what could make that sound other than the 4 driving lights on my car. So I look out the front window and see glass in front of my car and he says "uh, you better come out here."

So now I have to possibly get a whole new hood cuz there is 5 small dents right behind the lights, below the scoop. the bottom of the hood and grill is pushed in and the hod doesnt close without me sitting over each latch.

So what lights should I get now on my roommates dime?!

I think you should get the exact same lights. It wouldn't be right to get better ones.

On a side note, always move your car.

Accidents happen, and you seem pretty cool about it. Backing up is really hard to learn and get right. If you're talking about driving lights, I'm partial to the factory ones.

Oh, no, wait, have to be fair. Check the cost of replacing the ones you have with the exact same ones, and let us know that number then we can help more. Have the hood done. Have him check his insurance unless he's covering it himself.

Beat me to that one... Ridiculous. It does seem that some people are just not wired correctly for backing up...but they seem to be the same people that have trouble in any other gear, also.

I think driving tests should include a reverse obstacle course.

but wow that sucks..good thing you knew him and that he's payin for it.
could be worse. but then again. you can't blow up on him unlike if some random person did it.

but hopefully everything is like brand new buyin new parts and such.
and look at it in a good way...new hood and new lights. can't go wrong.

Same thing happened to me in my old car. It had flip up headlights, so that wasn't fun to have repaired at all.

As stated, I'd get the price to replace the ones you have on there already and work from there.

I let my 16 YO step-son drive (with me in the car) Saturday. I wanted to talk o my neighbor who was in his yard (about 40 feet back, so I told the kid to just back up to the neighbor.
As we're entering his yard I ask my son, "Don't you see that you're in the yard?"
His answer almost made me slap him on the head. He replies "I can't see anything behind me"

ThomB...I think I might be raising your son's twin brother - who is also embarking on the milestone of learning to drive! Perhaps they were seperated at birth

How parents survive Driver's Ed with their children baffles me. I'm 36, hoping I live to see 37, or that my son lives to see 17.

Sounds like the girl who backed Daddy's Yukon into my Buick on monday. Then she decided to speed away, I guess not noticing the 3 witnesses! When the cops showed up at her house she said she left because she thought she hit a SHOPPING CART!

Buick...shopping cart...same thing.

She did a few thousand worth of damage, so she smacked the car hard enough to move it in the spot and said she thought she hit a shopping cart.

YES, A BIG WHITE 4000 POUND SHOPPING CART!!!

Sorry, rant off.

My wife and I were in her mustang (since gone) and this girl, couldn't be more than 20 years old, hops into the suburban next to us. She proceeds to back up and drag her bumper cover along the fender of the mustang. I hop out casually and start into her..."do you not see the car here"..."how long have you been driving" and so on. Made her cry. Normally I wouldn't have pushed so hard, but I have no tolerance for stupidity or ignorance. I don't understand people that think it's "just a car" and "it's not THAT big a deal". I did everything I could to refrain from putting my foot into the door of her truck...but I digress. Frickin' people.

The car carried enough groceries before I got it, I cannot refute that statement...although it is on mighty heavy shopping cart to back into.

The situation has not turned out as well as I had expected due to their complete lack of cooperation, but it will be settled by their insurance paying mean in some form or another...

On the original topic, how are things working out with your roommate and the mini?

Have a camera ready for when you tell roommate how much a new hood, painting, new lights and install cost. I wanna see his face! I bet that he's more careful backing up next time (and about 3k lighter in the wallet!)

Ok, so I took the MCS to DentPro to see what the heck is up....$375 for the dents, but he can't promise it won't make the paint crap....forget that option.

I go to a body and paint shop recommended by the MINI dealership and they estimated $2,702. $425 for the hood, and then they have to paint it and install all the stuff from the old hood. Driving lights from MINI are $150, but I suspect its going to be more like $250. The PIAA fog lights are $267.

I am getting another estimate tonight or tomorrow.

I am saying forget the lights right now, he can pay for installing my pulleys, sway bar, and beltline blackout, maybe even the control arms....I will get the Alta Light Bar later this summer on my dime. The hood was all pushed out of place! He was offering to get me a carbon fiber hood, but i have read about install problems so forget that.

He wants to try to take care of this without getting the insurance company involved. He knows it was his fault and he has to pay, but he keeps joking saying it was my fault for parking there, even though i told him multiple times i was there and i offered multiple times to move my car.

Its not like he would have to do a 20 point turn to get out, he had like 5 feet between our cars, 10 feet on the passenger side, and 30 feet in front of him....he just plain forgot....then again, he does always ask me how to spell things like "Lawyer" and "Prayer" and "Suing"...

I would have liked to have seen that... if only because I imagine that's how I would act if I were the victim of such a thing.
