Sticky shifter?

Hi, I have a '06 MC with 7k miles on it. Ever since new, I've felt the shifter was very 'sticky' going from 1st to 2nd, I've read somewhere that a bit of 'notchyness' is normal. But mine feels more sticky than notchy in the sense that there seems to be a spot at/near neutral that takes quite a bit more effect to pull past than everywhere else in the shift path. In traffic it can get really annoying and takes the fun out of driving the MINI.

Do others have this symptom? What can I do to make the shift smoother?

Thanks.
