On my way to work!! I have already done a search and read others problems. I had no loss of power. I did get gas yesterday, but I drove it afterward and the light came on this morning. I'm just concerned. I'm still waiting for the body shop to fit me in for that stupid tree chipper accident, now this!! I haven't called the dealer yet. I don't think they open until 9 am. UGH!!!!! I haven't had any problems until this point! (6500 miles)

You said you just put gas in your car last night. let me ask you a question? Did you make sure that the gas cap was 'TIGHTLY' closed? When you close the lid if the lid does not seal properly it will automatically trigger your "Check Engine Light". This is described in detailed in your owner's manual documentation.

When you replace the gas cap, make sure you hear at least 3 clicks when you are tighten it back up. That way you can ensure that there is a proper seal and no loss of pressure from your fuel system.

Good luck.

I was kind of in a hurry when I got gas yesterday. Maybe I didn't tighten it enough. I hope that's the problem. I called my dealer and they said the same thing. I guess during lunch I'll take it out and see. Do you know how long it would take to reset for the light to go off. Or would the light go off right after tightening? Thanks a bunch!

It could take a day or two for the system to reset itself. Relax, this happened several times with my wife's 3 series when we first got it. Nothing to worry about.

Does anyone have a reading for how much torque one should apply to the gas cap?

You just need to tighten it beyond the first "click", which is printed on the gas cap itself.

The gas caps tightens clockwise and wise it reaches its turning limit, you'll hear a series of clicks. Make sure you click the cap 2 or 3 times.

Thanks everyone. I was really worried. I guess we'll just see. I'll drive it home tonight and maybe it will reset by then. I hope it's nothing major. Thanks!!

Mandy,
I know everyone put you at ease, but since our cars were made around the same time I should let you know that my SES light used to go on and then off after a few days. I did not have loss of power at that time.
It did however get progressively worse where the EML light also came on, and later on there was a loss of power and stalling. Eventually it died during rush hour at Gude and 355.

Keep a vigilant eye on it. I went through the whole gas cap routine also, but that was not it. They replaced the wiring harness in the end.

I just thought you should know.

Lolo

Thank you, Lolo. I read your posts during my search. UGH!! I have already made my decision that if it goes out and comes back I will take it in and have it taken care of. I am sooo upset about it. I hope I make it home tonight. Oh the bright side, the body shop called me and set up my body work for the week of 6/16 !! That was the earliest they could do. UGH! This accident happened the end of April.

Mandy, are we in the bad luck club?? Our pretty little Silk Greens are just 6 months old and both have been hit and have had some operating difficulties. Keep us posted regarding your current problem. And in less than one month, your baby will be (outwardly) good as new. I hope things get better from here.

Mandy,

I hope that it was just your gas cap that was lose, because i had the same problem. I just took my car to the shop and they said that it was the wiring harness also. No big deal right? Well apparently it mega back-ordered and the part won't be in for two weeks!!!! I don't know how I'm gonna handle not being able to drive it!

P.S. Only had 4000 miles on 'er

goodluck

My service engine soon light came on too a couple of months ago. It really freaks you out because there is a huge orange light right in yur view. I tried the gas cap thing and we were getting ready to go out of town the next week. Took it to the dealer the thermostat was bad. Had it replaced now everything is good. Maybe it's a silk green thing.

Well, it's still on. I'm going to give it until the drive home today. If it doesn't go off I'll call and schedule for it to go in on Tuesday. Atleast it happened before the weekend. I can use my husbands gross Cavalier. They have had the same problems, poor things!!

Update:
It went off Friday night on the way home. Hopefully it was just the gas cap and not problems to come. If it comes on again, straight to the dealer!! Thanks everyone!

Good deal!. After the 32.2 update your car should work like the finest piece of Swiss clockwork machinery.

Enjoy!

Cooper4us, what are you basing your 2-3 click recommendation on? My dealer told me one click, and I believe that that's what's printed on the gas cap as well. Applying too much torque could be a bad thing too, I would think.

You are not applying additional torque by clicking the gas cap more than one time. I Like to do it for my own sake just to have assurance that the gas cap is properly shut.

Mine will only click once too. The day I got gas I was in a hurry, so I don't think I even clicked it! I'm just glad it went off. Now, just to get that upgrade!! My service will be due in about 1000 miles or so. I'm just gonna wait until then.
