New to the MINI world

Hi,

I'm new to the Mini world. My name is Marc and I have a Mini on the way, it should be here by the end of the month, and I would like to meet some other Mini owners and have some fun. I have been in the Car hobby for over 20 years, with Bugs, American motors, BMW Isettas, and now Minis. I would like to know when the next Mini meeting is and where. if you would like to know more about my Mini it is in the owners network at miniusa.com under charliebrown. hope to hear from some of you soon,

later

Marc

Welcome to the MINI family Marc !

You might want to check out our website a www.pdxmini.org for more info. We have lots of things planned for the rest of the summer. We will have a contingent of about 40 MINI's at this weekends Portland Historic Races at PIR. If you have a chance to come out, look us up in the car corral section (located across the bridge in the infield).

Our next meeting is this coming Wednesday, July 12th. And if you can't make it to the next meeting, general meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at Izzy's Pizza in Wilsonville. If you want dinner plan to arrive by 6pm; the meeting starts at 6:30pm.

Hi Marc!

Like Scott said, welcome to the family! We have a host of events planned for the summer in the Portland, Southwest Washington and Salem areas. We often do events down towards your neck of the woods as well. We've got 70 members and about 115 MINIs in the group, so we are very busy, and we do our best to put on events for all types of interests.

We just completed a multi-day run from the Salem area, down through Oregon backroads, to California, over into northern Nevada to the famed "Bruno's Country Club" (that sounds fancy but it's really just a well known restaurant/bar/motel in Gerlach, the location where the land speed record was set on the Nevada salt flats), then back across California to drive the famed highway 36 to the California coast (140 miles of pure curves). We turned northwards at Ferndale and headed back north to Oregon.

As Scott Mentioned we've got the Portland Historic races coming up, and we'd love for you to drop in at PIR. Registration is closed for participation in the event, but you can certainly come and hang out with us in the MINI corral area. Event info: http://www.pdxmini.org/documents/2006historicsflyer.pdf

The next driving run you could participate in, would be the Harvest Festival Tour in the Battleground, Washington area. That one should be a hoot. RSVP to events@pdxmini.org (the cost is $5.00 for members and $15.00 for non-members, and all proceeds are used for club operations.) There is also a catered barbeque afterwards, at the Lewis estate for a nominal charge. More info is available here:
http://www.pdxmini.org/documents/2006harvestflyer.pdf

Anyway, don't hesitate to contact members of the club if you have questions:

email:

Vice President/ Membership Director:
vicepresident@pdxmini.org

Communications Director:
communications@pdxmini.org

Event Coordinators:
events@pdxmini.org

Hope this is a good primer...

Cheers!

I will try to make it up for one, But 6:30P on a Wed night not easy during summer (I pull roughly 20 hours of ot a week ) but come Sept I can, and I will send off my membership tommorow 7/6. I will keep my eye out for a event on a Sat to meet you folks. The real funny thing is I might not be able to get the time off to come to portland to get my Mini, I will have to come up with a good reason, I got it! Picking up a family member in Portland.

I've beeen lost and now I found my way

HI Gang,

Well I have been really buzy with work and things, Got my MINI on 8 /12. I found it strange that there was my #1 dream car in the parking lot, a DeLorian. not fair. taken my Rebeca Linn on two big trips the coast for the day and Warm springs for the weekend. Have had tons of fun. but no word from PDX MINI on my membership. I plan to come up for the October meeting, to finaly meet some other MINI owners. I have only meet one other owner down here in the Albany area. But itis nice to have time again to goof off on the net.. see you folks soon

Marc

Did you catch the plates on that DeLorean? I might know them! Sadly it wasn't mine as it's currently on jack stands while I replace the 25 year old radiator. Trust me, there's nothing better then owning both a MINI and a DeLorean.

Did you get it done? It was fun to see that you had your DL at the ABFM.

Yep, I wrapped up the radiator install just a few days later. In fact, I discovered the leak after driving home from the ABFM. I guess the 98 degree heat was just too much for the 25 year old plastic end tanks! Right now I only wish the weather was better so I can be out there driving it some more. Oh well, at least I still have the MINI for daily driving.

Attached is a picture of both the new fans and radiator before I installed them. This all brass unit should last a lot longer! Also attached is a picture I took during the replacement. Note the recycling bin and phone book holding up the AC condenser.

Cool! Glad to see you got it done. Are parts easy to source on the car? (I assume many were off the shelf GM units?)

Or is it all a morass of custom bits?

Actually, parts are very easy to come by. There are 6 vendors in NA that provide NOS and new parts. While there are a few GM parts in it (dash indicators and door latches), most are European (the car was built in N. Ireland). So parts can range from Bosch, Volvo, Renault, Girling, and sadly Lucas. For the radiator, it's unique to the DeLorean. Fortunately most vendors sell custom made brass replacements. I could get a NOS one if I wanted, but I didn't want one that had 25 year old plastic end tanks.

To give you an idea of what's out there for parts, visit:
http://www.delorean.com/ Click on Online Store.
They own the original factory inventory. So they have just about everything. Another favorite place of mine is:
http://www.delorean-parts.com/
They sell the "Door Launchers". This allows me to open my doors via a remote. Makes those door poppers look like crap.

cool info, thanks.

I nerd out on stuff like this (parts websites for cars I don't own and such) sometimes.
