PDX MINI heads to the Champ Car Races
Hello PDX MINI Members-
A part of the Portland Rose Festival for 23 years, The G.I Joes Grand Prix of Portland is making its annual stop at Portland International Raceway, June 16th, 17th, and 18th. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We are making final arrangements with the event promoter for group discount tickets to the event.
Before we are able to determine the promoter's discount, first, we need to guage final interest from the membership, as to what is the most desired option for ticketing, in terms of price, and dates of attendance.
First, the info:
The event is three full days. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. On each of these days, The Champ Cars (the stars of the show), The Mazda Atlantic Cars; Formula Fords and other "support" series will run on the track at various times in thier respective practice, qualifying, and warm-up sessions. There is action on track, nearly all the time. In addition, you can take a break from the track action and walk through the infield paddock area for a close look at the men and machines that make up the Champ Car World Series (infield paddock pass required...worth it!) . You can't get much closer than this unless you're a tire changing team member! The Yokohama Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda teams are located in the south area paddock; their paddock is open to all spectators.
You can explore the midway activities and souvenir booths and sample a wide variety of food and beverages from the concession stands. You can experience the many choice spectator vantage points by taking the "fan-tram" to other parts of the track.
Below, are images of the cars you will see racing:

Click here to see over a minute of video action about the event - 3.25 mb, recommended for high speed internet connections. Expect approx. 1 to 2 minutes to download on Broadband Cable, slightly longer on most DSL connections, and much longer on dial-up connections.
Click here to see the full event video (over 3 minutes of action) - 8.58 mb!, recommended for very high speed internet connections only, and even then requires some patience. Expect approx. 3-1/2 to 4 minutes to download on Broadband Cable.

One of the support races for the GI Joe Portland Grand Prix is the United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC). We plan on running our USTCC #58 MINI S this year. We ran as a support race to the CHAMP cars at San Jose last year and what a blast.
The USTCC is made up of Touring Cars from MINI, BMW, Honda, Acura, VW, Fords, Chevrolet, Dodge, Subaru, Mitsubishi and others, all competing against each other in the same class. The cars a balanced by adjusting the weight to HP of each car.
As we get closer we'll post more information about the weekend with our team. Here is the tentative schedule. GI JOE SCHEDULE

Brilliant! I didn't realize the USTCC was confirmed as a support event. Had I but known... I'll get the info to the PDX MINI crew, and hopefully we'll get good MINI turnout.
A built in cheering section!
I'll for sure, swing throught the paddock area to check out your entry!

We're sorry to say we have been unable to make it to Portland for this weekends USTCC race witht eh CHAMP cars. Thou we will be unable to be there I think the Vesko #98 MINI S might be there. We do wish we could have come to Portland.
I dont know what to do. My sister just offered me 2 free passes. They are special passes too, VIP or something as they are on the safety crew. I would even get to camp out in the middle of the track at night. But I have to stay home and remodel to get my condo on the market by monday. I really want to be irresposible and go anyway, but I know that I shouldnt. Hmm....

I thought I was nuts. I just now read this, and I'm sorry you couldn't make it.
Portland is a great track to run, especially since they widened the festival turn.
No MINI's in the feild I'm afraid. It's been a great weekend so far, and the UTSCC series is a real gas to watch.

Well I ended up having to come home early to do some "responsible" things. I had a good time though, sorry I missed you guys. I did get to crash the volunteer/crew bbq and went on a late night drunken track walk with about 40 others last night, too. The leaders made us all lay down on turn 5 and take a rest, strange group.
Maybe next time
