considering an S2000
considering an S2000
I really am drawn to this car after driving it....... I would not modify it anywhere near the Mini..... the equivelant of pulley, sway bar, cat-back, upgrade brakes, CAI, and wheels and tires...... these are the essential mods for the Mini and I'm sure there is a similar list for the S2000.....
who has experience with this car or knows much about them.....
I have been to the S2ki board and looked around .... they are a pretty "gung ho" group....

When I was buying in '04, the 2 autos I was deciding between were the S2000 & the MCSc. For me, the playing field was pretty even but the S2000 was looking good for reliability issues & the MCSc was winning for looks & initial cost. I got an insurance quote on both & the S2000 was going to up my rates by around 50%, the Mini was hardly going to change the rate I was paying. I was leaning toward the Mini anyway but the insurance rates sealed the deal for me

There's a lot of info on S200's in this thread

My experience of them is that they are great fun to drive if you work hard enough to keep in the high rev power band. This can be a bit painful and requires concentration. It also makes the mpg take a big nose dive.
Clarkson described this with a bucket of water. In low revs the car loses water (fuel) through a small hole in the bottom, just a trickle, to illustrate when driven hard he turned the bucket upside down. They can also be a little "snug" if you are above average size.
Great fun to drive though.

Any time you insure an two seat car, the insurance is substantially more that a car with a back seat. They consider them sport cars Hence the 2+2 feature of the Mini and numerous other performance vehicles are not considered such and the insurance is lower

I saw your thread and thought "Get one!'
My husband and I had an 03 (bought it three months after i picked up my 03 MCS). He was able to talk the dealer down to under invoice. If you bargain, and the dealer is trying to get rid of the previous year, they will work with you.
We had no problems with it (had 33K mi when we sold it), just had to get rid of it because we still had payments, my husband has a company car, and we weren't driving it enough to justify keeping it after my daughter was born. If it was paid for, we most likely would have kept it. It was a fun car, great performance for the price, in my opinion. The worst part (in my opinion) is that the sound system needs modification to be halfway decent with the top down.

hahaha. funny thing is is that, i was having this same dillema when it came down to choosing a car that i would want. and for me, when i looked at an s2000, i just thought wow. but then i realized the insurance cost for that thing haha. compared to the mini that thing is preety high up there. also realized that mini makes you feel like a kid again. just driving it around having fun. what motoring is all about ya know? hahahha. so it just came down to the mini. and also (it has a huge tradition going back to the original mini's haha :D). i would say go with mini. its a one of a kind car. honda relliable, insurance is high, and SPINOUTS :D
You can argue (maybe not successfully) that the S2000 is overpriced. You can also argue (successfully) that a Z4 is overpriced, unreliable and butt-ugly.
Too many good reviews of the S2000. Too many blah reviews of the Z4. I've driven both - the S2000 is the more pure car. Used ones can be had pretty reasonably.
S2k is great fun at the track. Loves to rev, brakes that can make it do a front flip. The OEM tires (SO3's, iirc) are really sticky, but they don't squeal so you don't have any warning before they break away (my personal experience).
Not so much fun driving in stop and go traffic. The engine is gutless below 4k rpm. Worse than driving a CVT MC. The ride is harsh. Lots of noise intrusion (good for track, gets old for daily commuting or long road trips). The factory stereo isn't that great, but I'd rather listen to the revs. If you put Blizzaks on it and aren't completely retarded, you'll be fine up to moderate amounts of snow. The car is light enough that you'll end up riding on top of the snow pack instead of plowing through it. If it is deep snow, fuhgedaboutit and call in sick or drive something more suitable.
