what do you guys think of the Toyota FJ. I saw pics of the concept years ago and was slightly impressed, but now that it's actually in production...well, I'm really really liking it, to the point where I'm wavering on ordering a MCS next month . Both cars are retro, unique and EXTREMELY cool, but on extreme sides of the spectrum. Both the MCS and FJ have similar starting costs, about a grand difference (don't know with options haven't gotten that far) and I know there is a markup on the FJs. I've never really considered getting an SUV (the only one I would actually consider is the range rover sport, but way out of my price range) but this car has really got me thinking. Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there even though this is a mini crowd! Actually considering the FJ Cruiser myself, but not as a MINI replacement. I'm looking to replace a 2001 Tacoma 4x4 with it, and I'm just waiting for the call from my dealership that they have a manual transmissioned one in to try.

Not sold on it yet and I've only seen one from a distance sitting in the showroom...I'll report back once I've tested it.

My opinion... I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the FJ just doesn't do it for me. This isn't just SUV-bias, either - I can appreciate an attractive SUV (like the Land Rover you mentioned), but this one just seems kind of boring. The only "retro" features are the front grille and lights, and I guess maybe the fenders. Otherwise, it's just an ugly (albeit utilitarian) box that I think will look about as exciting as a Honda Element two years from now. It doesn't even come close to comparing to the MINI in coolness.

And what's with the taillights that were apparently designed to be as vulnerable to impact as possible? Not that people can feel cool in SUVs without brush bars, but it seems like they'd actually serve a purpose on this vehicle.

 

I think it's more of a new school retro. I definitely see ties between the FJ an the old FJ40.

I think one of the things that draws me to MINI is the "classic" look it has. I also thought of the Element comparison. The FJ is basically a Element on steroids...

 

If the vehicle is more then just transportation and you want something to enjoy that is engaging and fun to drive you have to go with the Mini no doubt about it

If you really needed the utility of the SUV it doesn't seem that you would have been on the verge of getting an MCS, so is it just about looks?

Anyway, aside from even trying to compare an SUV and MCS and not having a test drive to make a real evaluation of the FJ in any case, I'd consider avoiding first (and maybe even second) year issues that are bound to come up with completely new model cars.

 

It looks pretty cool...I had a 1981 Land Cruiser and it was fun. Might want to check out the recent Car and Driver comparison where the FJ placed but 4th out of 5 however.

 

I'm 100% in favor of it. My second car is currently a 2005 Audi A4. I originally planned on buying it after the lease ends (was one of the last of the B6s and got a fantastic deal) but lately have been reconsidering in favor of a Nissan Xterra. The FJ has now been added to the list of SUVs that will be considered when the time rolls around. I think it'd look fantastic living next to my MCS.

 

Just this past weekend.....I pulled the trigger and did it!

Mainly for practicality. And the insanely high resale value (trade in) of a 2003 MCS with 67K miles!





I wish u all the best with your MINIs and i know i will still be trolling these msg boards to check out one of my favorite cars, but right now i am having a blast driving my FJ.

 

I like the FJ! I would seriously consider it as a replacement for my ancient Isuzu Trooper.

 

I have to admit I think the FJ looks okay. I'm going to go on a tirade here though. One reason I bought the MINI was to be a bit on the "green" side. I realize that a MCS getting 21 mpg on premium fuel is not exactly the best example, but I feel like I'm doing my small part by not taking up excessive room or resources when I drive. Most people that own SUV's just don't really need them. My A3 wagonlet can carry 3/4 people and their gear easily and gets better mileage than the MCS. If you're going to drive the FJ around by yourself most of time, please think again before you buy.

 

I like it, but the fact that it has 3 windsheild wipers really bothers me. It looks, well, dumb

If you can get over that, which is prob not even noticeable to anyone but me, then it's a cool suv

 

I agree wholeheartedly;I know I know, I've already made my POV clear in other threads about SUV usage, accidents, wear and tear on the roads (for the big ones), parking, etc :P

Enjoy it of course - but I still just don't get how an MCS and an FJ fulfill the same role - guess you just wanted something different that will be novel for awhile, size & type of car notwithstanding and no longer want to drive the twisties..

Again, have fun and check your lower blind spots for nimble cars wanting to pass

 

I am getting 24MPG (EPA is 19city/22highway) in my FJ and we are still in "break-in" mode. What I miss the most is the handling. The MINI is awesome at that.

 

I liked it when I first heard they were going to come out with it.
Our dealer actually has two of them sitting on the lot.I dont plan to get rid of the MINI, but maybe I'll swing by and check it out!

The FJ1 is pretty cool. It's bigger than an element; I saw someone compare it to that. It can actually go offroad too.

When I get rid of my SUV, I may get one of these--but they're going to have to do something about rear visibility--these things are downright dangerous the way Toyota has configured the back.

 

Best looking vehicle to come out of Toyota in many years. As far as real off-roaders go (Jeep CJ, Land Rover Defender, Nissan Patrol, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, etc.) this new offering is the dog's bullocks.

Very few vehicles tempt me away from my MCS, this is one of them. Probably goes back to several years spent driving earlier Land Cruisers in the tropics.

 

Guess you don't like any of these either.

Lots of vehicles have had three wipers, some of them have even been design and marketing successes.

I agree. Drove the old LC's and Land Rovers in Africa for a couple years. They were not luxury liners then, just tough trucks to get you in and then back out! Heh heh, but then we were also driving MGBGTs, Fiat 850 Spiders, and the new 240Z and riding BSA Lightning's, Ducati Desmo's and Norton Commando's and those horrible Motoguzzi's.

I've been looking at these. I wouldn't buy until 3rd year out or so, kind of like I did with the MINI, but early research is fun.
The rear/side visibility is a bit of an issue but overall I like the design.
The forums, however, are not like here. Not as friendly overall. On my first post just asking general questions I was immediately accussed of being A. a troll, and B. not a female
The demographic seems to be male 20's and kind of an attitude. (Don't get me wrong, I like 20-something males some of my favorite people!)
I hope it turns out to be as good a vehicle as the hype, cuz I really like Toyotas in general.

The three wiper trick is to get around covering the government required amount of area covered by wipers. They have to cover a certain percentage of the windsheild and since the FJ (and the Etype, MGB, and Sprite) have short windshields, they needed three wipers to get the number. The other option is the articulated wiper like a later Jag or a Benz, but those are expensive.

I like the FJ somewhat with it's steel wheels and all, but I like the Hummer H3 better style wise. The FJ is too bulbous looking to me. Not a bad choice though and I'm sure the resale will be stellar.

And Bocron, I'm a 20 something male but I think I have a good attitude (of course good taste too, PWB).

 

I actually am considering an SUV, like a Cayenne Turbo , wishful thinking, only consideration

 

Spitfire, that's a given if you have a MINI, and a PW/B, oh and you're a southerner. What else could a girl want
