http://International Truck and Engine Corp. is producing what it calls the world's biggest production pickup, a 14,500-pound monster capable of towing 20 tons.
"It's a super head-turner," said Ken Wallace, an International dealer in Fort Myers, Fla., who has been driving one for about two weeks. "Other motorists hang out of their cars to take pictures of it."
But does anybody really need a vehicle that is nine feet tall, eight feet wide, 21 1/2 feet long and gets about seven miles on a gallon of diesel?
Rob Swim, International's marketing director, said the 5-passenger CXT will appeal to image-conscious contractors, roofers, landscapers and other small-business owners who can use the towing power but also want to draw attention to themselves.
"This truck is for businesses that want to make a bold statement," Swim said. "It's for business people that want to promote as much as perform."
International, the operating division of Warrenville, Ill.-based Navistar International Corp., makes the CXT at its Garland plant. The mayor and many of the plant's 700 employees attended an official CXT unveiling Thursday, although the truck has been in production for several weeks.
International makes about 85,000 commercial vehicles a year, from dump trucks to school buses. But it hasn't made a full-size pickup since the 1970s.
From the front, the CXT looks identical to International's other heavy trucks. International added a pickup bed to its truck chassis and dressed up the cab. One interior package includes leather seats, wood grain trim, a drop-down DVD player, satellite radio and a rear-mounted camera.
But without question, the most noteworthy thing about the CXT is its size. It weighs nearly twice as much as the Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup and is more than two feet taller. It dwarfs full-size sport-utility vehicles.
International says the CXT is the heaviest production pickup out there and boasts the most towing capacity. It comes with all-wheel drive, air brakes, a 70-gallon fuel tank and a bed that tilts back like a dump truck.
The price is also big _ $93,000, but options can boost that to $115,000. Some other large pickups cost under $30,000.
Company officials say they expect to sell nearly 100 this year and 500 next year.
Swim said the company isn't marketing the CXT as a consumer vehicle, although he added that drivers don't need a commercial license to get behind the wheel.
"Anybody can lease a Hummer now for $500 a month. Soccer moms are driving them," he said. "This is not a soccer mom's vehicle."

Fill er' up???
That'll be $120
Sheit, I spend less than that a MONTH with a my Mini. Many people will spend that a week or so with this
Just for kix, I'd like to drive one sometime. Tho with a mask on, to conceal my real identity. I'm wondering if someone will lower one of these and put rims on it

220 hp and 540 lb. ft. of torque
From International:
With an electronically controlled turbocharger and four valves per cylinder, the engine delivers responsiveness, acceleration, outstanding fuel efficiency, extended serviceability and long-term durability. Among businesses for whom the International CXT is ideal: construction, lawn care businesses, lawn and garden stores, brick or stone contractors, home builders, carpenters, landscape designers, roofers, home improvement companies, auto body repair or custom paint shops, commercial boating businesses and boat racers.

In the case of my own the real head turning would be to see what kind of person would actually drive that on regular streets.
Why not just put wheels on the battle ship Potemkin, put on a tin foil hat, shout "charge the blockhouse boys", then after hitting hopefully only non-living things try and park that beast sprung from the loins of hell?*
*comment is void if applied to industrial users not using a public street

To paraphrase Crocodile Dundee,
"That's not a truck.
THIS is a truck!"

"The price for one of these trucks is $3,000,000, not including tires. All large trucks like the T282 don't just have wing mirrors to see what is behind when they reverse; they also have video cameras, usually two on either side and another on the rear axle, to give the driver a full view of the road around him or her.
Overall length: 48.5 ft Overall width: 29.75 ft Empty vehicle weight: 443,000 lbs/ 201,000 kg/ 197 tons
Operating weight loaded: 1,163,000 lbs/ 528,590 kg/ 597 tons"

There's always one that's bigger!

That International truck is actually far more useful than an SUV. Except for a few people with more dollars than sense, and a real feeling of inadequacy, that truck's market will be to those where a one-ton pickup is not quite big enough for their needs but dont want to step into the true heavy duty haulers (that often require CDL). The price is a deterrent too, except to those who can most benefit by it. I know a few that actually NEED this kind of truck.
Now, if I ever spot a soccer mom tooling around in one of those, I WILL follow her to her destination and shove her head into the fender. I doubt I would be convicted, the positive publicity would be overwhelming.

So, I thought soccer mom's were beleagured women stretched to the limit, trying to balance work, home, and kiddies' needs on a tight budget. Now I learn the typical soccer mom can afford a $500 a month lease plus who knows how much per mile in gas just so she can look like a Rambette. So many better vehicles for soccer momming.
Granted, 'soccer mom' here is a misnomer, even in the International advertising. Your assessment is closer, but not in all cases are the women beleagured. In some cases they are annoying type-a personalities trying to make it on every a-list out there.
Around here the danger is in the DINK yuppie female at the helm of a Navigator or Escalade, cell phone wedged against her shoulder, PDA of client contacts in the other hand, on her way to the next inevitable meeting and not paying attention to the road. No time for soccer. I watched such an individual drift into the other lane and nearly lose control of her Silly Underutilized Vehicle when she realized almost too late. The kicker came when I slowed down to check if she was okay after she pulled to the side. As I drove by, she gave me the finger.
It was then that I wished MINIs came with optional flamethrowers. It would have been money well spent that day.

Ha! I actually parked next to one of these behemoths at the store yesterday. What a waste of space that thing is! The only good thing about it is that the guy driving had parked waaaay out in the boonies and I didn't feel so lonely out there by myself!

Will those flamethrowers match our MINIs' body color or be in contrasting chrome?
"Silly Underutilized Vehicle" is awesome, sweetie! Too funny!

As for 'silly underutilized vehicle', I'm trying to get as many people I know to think in those terms. If you actually have a use for them, great, more power to you. But if you buy an H2 and the most offroad you find yourself with it is rubbing the curb outside Williams-Sonoma, you need your head examined.

I've owned an Isuzu Trooper since it was born in 1988! It's very silly, but it's also very much utilized! I haul my huge paintings around in it, and it's been on many adventures in the Southwest! But, I will admit that I have rarely actually used its 4-wheel drive! Oopsie!
