Considering a new car (keeping mini of course) :)

Hey all,
So my dad came up to me today and told me that he wanted to trade in his 2010 X5. The warranty is about to expire, and he feels that he's ready to move on.
He really likes the Evoque. I too love the way that car looks, but I feel that going from an X5 to an evoque he may not be too happy. I don't want to tell him what to do with his money, but I want him to make a wise decision. So I have come to you all for suggestions on what other cars he can consider. My mother drives it most of the time, but he will have it on the weekends.

He has the regular X5 nothing fancy.
  • DVD Nav
  • HD Radio
  • Running Boards
  • Cold Weather Package (heated everything)
  • Adaptive lights
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Leather
  • Wood trim
  • Rear view cam (and top view)

I think he would like something equipped similarly for about $55 (he got his X5 for 53 in 2010).

Here are some pros and cons IMO about the X5
Pros. very spacious, a lot of features, drives well, looks nice
Cons. cheap interior buttons (plastic is chipping), seats not the most comfortable, lacks power for such a heavy car

Feel free to add any pros and cons.

So with all that being said, what cars would you guys and gals buy or recommend? My dad is open to any type of car (preferably a Z4, but my mom only likes SUVs :( )

My wife drives a Jaguar XF and loves it. If your Dad likes speed, power, etc., he might consider the Jaguar XFR (510 hp 5.0 liter V8 supercharged engine). Something different anyway.

My wife has an Evoque and loves it. The interior is very spacious and carries four people easily. Pros are styling, handling and interior detailing. The panoramic sunroof is also pretty cool. You don't see many on the road. Cons to me are mileage, which is surprisingly poor for a 2.0L turbo, but then again, if you are dropping $50K+ on a vehicle, this may not be a big issue. Rear visibility is poor, the rear window is essentially a gunport. Count on relying on the rear camera when backing up. Lastly, with the rear seats up, storage capacity is poor. Only room for one set of golf clubs.

Just some feedback from an owner.

David...
How's reliability? Is it quick? Can it do well with a trip to Costco? Would you pick it again over an x3?

Thanks!

Hi aldito. Regarding reliability, we have had no problems. We have close to 20K on ours. The only "glitch" we had was a failure of the electronic rear hatch button to close the door. That was fixed with a software update. Other than that, all is good, and ours is the first model year and one of the first sold in Houston. The AWD system is amazing, my wife did a LR sponsored off-road event last year and the car performed beautifully. The 2.0L is rated at close to 250 hp, so I really don't find it lacking for power, so it gets out of its own way. It does great on a Costco run, but you may need to use the back seat for big packages. We actually tested it against the then new X3 and the Q5. We thought both were fine (the Q5 is less roomy),but boring. The Evoque wins on style points. It got Motor Trend Truck of the Year in 2012, I believe. It rides on an LR2 chassis.

Worth a look and test drive IMHO.

Thanks for your review. I've read good things but nothing compares to the words of an actual owner. Will be teat driving on Friday.

No problem, but avoid teat driving while at the wheel. This has been proven to be more dangerous than texting while driving!

:-)

Let me know how it goes. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

One last word. We have the 20" wheels on ours. I think it makes the car look better, and it does not detract from the ride, surprisingly enough.
