Convince me to buy new tires....

So I have a set of perfectly good Pirelli Euforia RF's on my 06 R50 (195/55/16), good tread left... other than the jarring ride and the fact that I had to go to about 6 different tire shops to get a flat fixed - I like 'em enough.

BUT - Discount Tire has a $100 mail in rebate and free shipping on many of their tires. This means I can get a set of four Kumho Ecsta 4X's for $288 shipped. Seems too good to turn down!

Part of me wants to just wear out the current tires (who knows how long I will be stuck with them ), and another part of me wants to jump on the Discount Tire deal and ditch/re-sell the RF's.

Decisions, decisions....

I'm going to wear out my run flats before I switch to standard tires. I'm just too cheap to get rid of tires that have good tread still on them.

There will be other rebates and other deals.

look in the owners manual or on the door post for an alternate tire inflation pressure for "high speed" motoring

on my cms all4, stock pressure is 32 psi all around and the alternate pressure is 38 psi all around

upping the pressure to 38 psi made the ride and handling better, much better with the oem run-flats

Thanks! I'm going to try inflating the tires more. If anything I'll buy them and store them. Then I can list the Pirelli's on eBay and if someone buys them, I can swap them out, or I can just wear out the Pirellis.

If it helps, I put a new set of Kumho 4x in that size on my 08 mcs a few months back and have been thrilled with them so far. I've gone from 17 inch run flats to 17 inch non run flats....and now after having hit a pothole causing wheel damage for the last damn time have gone to 16 inch wheels for some relief! Best decision I ever made on this car. These 16 inch kumhos hold the road as well as any 17 inch performance tire I ever had on the car before run flat or not.....and the ride is so much more quiet and smooth now. Buy them...that's a good price.

So I just measured my tread and I'm at 2/32nd`s on two of the tires and 4/32nd`s on the other tires. I believe that justifies new tires now the second question is whether to pick up the set of used x-lites on craigslist or stick with the daytonas.

Just ordered these. I will be performing a rolling update of the tires as they are used. Seems like these are a good choice for a lot of MINI drivers.

I went with kumhos and loved them until the first water puddle. I ended up going with general extesa directional lot better in wet Conditions and last at lest 3 times longer than the kumhos

Lol godfather references aside, the super stiff sidewalls can actually bend your rims and are more likely to bend a rim before they bubble from hitting a pothole. That will run you a lot more than the cost of the new tires.

Granted I kept the run flats on mine but plan on ditching them now that they are worn. Wish I would've done it earlier.

Which kumhos did you go with? The Ecsta 4X's are supposed to have good wet performance.

The whole point of this thread is to convince me to ditch run-flats... bad ad placement, my friend. ;-)

We live in a 1br, so I had to come up with a "creative" storage solution, hence the birth of the tire book shelf. They collapsed 30min later while we were watching battlestar galactica. Scared the crap out of us.

Cylons attacked your bookshelf in a daring move utilizing the latest in Stealth technology.
Okay, so, for real, RFT = loud, concrete filled junk. I took mine off after about 6 wks, took that long to scrounge up the scratch for a new $1300+ set w/ 17" rims and new TPS. Never a seconds regret. The new ones ride better, handle better, make less noise and dont destroy your kidneys. Do it, you wont ever look back.

My theory is that the run-flat tires are actually cylons, and they attacked the non-rft's because they are trying to rid the world of the non-rft race. We must help our non-rft allies!

Miami, they were non directional escta asx and were cheap 600 with new ecw black rims. They were ordinary street tires. No aggression. Not very deep tread to start with got 20k out of them i been getting 50k per pair on generals altimax. Only put new on front now and rotate old ones to back. Then only two are worn out instead of all four. Heres a pic of those kumhos.

Why not just keep the old ones on front? For safety reasons it's recommended to put new tires on back. Also, you would wear the old ones out that much quicker and be able to get the other two kuhmos faster, brining you back to a matching set. With new tires on front, you will keep needing to buy tires two at a time.

My car eats up the inside tread on the rear. Why would i want to buy all four at once? That's why i dont rotate. When the rear shows wear i move the front to the back and get two new ones for the front. And the kumhos was too wore out on all four. Compound too soft for summer asphalt here. The general handle better. Ride better. Hook up better. Dont hydroplane. All around a better tire.

I recently purchased a set of the Kumho Ecsta 4Xs and thus far love them. I've put about 2K miles on them so they've really settled in nicely. I gave them their first real workout in October at The Dragon during Tar Heel MINI Motoring Club's annual MINIs Slay the Sleeping Dragon event and was immediately impressed. For an all-season tire, they certainly have the confident grip and feel of a summer tire and don't hydroplane at all. They are much less noisy than the set of Michellins I had and the ride is quite comfortable. Buy them - you won't regret it. Check out the Tire Rack's reviews.
