I do like it, but not sure I will be buying that as my next car... I'm leaning either towards buying an M3, OR buying a 2010-11 335i. Probably be getting the 335i because if I get the M3 I'll have to buy a winter vehicle.

But regardless the new 1 series M looks amazing!

Whoa where did you hear it was going to be $64k I saw on Jalopnik that it is going to be in the mid $40ks. Hell a regular 135i starts off somewhere around $32k.http://www.thetorquereport.com/2010/...to_cost_a.html
$64k is damn near M3 prices.

i guess over the pond the prices may not reflect the ones that will be over here....

The new BMW 1-series M Coupe goes on sale in the UK in May 2011 priced at £39,995, five quid more than the Audi RS3. Just 450 right-hand drive BMW 1-series M Coupes will be offered in Blighty.
thats over $62K base price roughly converted...

But I guess a production american version would cost less... 40 sure would be incredible!

Meh I like it and want one but that is more money then I want to spend. Considering the fact that you can buy a regular 135i tune and gain 40hp just off a tune.

Ok add an intake and exhaust.

The 1M isn't that impressive because it has the same motor and HP as the regular 135i. Some of the only differences are the body work and the suspension. For the extra cash, you could buy the 135i (which is what my husband has), get a couple extra add-on parts and it would be better than the 1M. Its a cool car dont get me wrong, but for what it is, the 135i is just as good, and I love to drive it! ... Just not as much as MCS

I've done the math, and quite honestly you are wrong.

True, the engine is a regular N54 but it does have some upgrades over the 135i. It is the same engine used in the Z4 3.5is and 335is, it puts out about 35hp more than the 135i. It also has a bigger intercooler, which will help with reliability over the regular N54.

But there's a lot more to it. The 1M has the suspension, brakes, wheels/tires, transmission and rear diff (LSD) from the M3. It has a reworked body with wider fenders to accommodate the wider track. The changes to the chassis alone make this an entirely different car to drive from a 135i.

Price out an engine tune, intercooler, complete suspension upgrade, new brakes, bigger wheels/tires and (here's the big one) a mechanical LSD for your husband's 135i and the parts alone will probably cost more than the price differential between a 2012 135i and 2012 1M.

I asked my husband and he listed the following as his mods: BMW Performance Power Kit (+20HP/32lb ft. over stock), BMW Performance Exhaust (+5HP/3lb. ft over stock), Sprint Booster, ARC-8 wheels (8lb weight loss over stock), Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs in +10mm over stock sizes front and rear, and BMW Performance slotted and drilled rotors front and rear. He's aware of the cost difference from 1M versus aftermarket, but I think it makes his car more unique and to his liking. The 1M is cool no doubt about that especially with the improvements over the stock 135i straight from the factory, but he would rather further modify his 135i versus trading in for the 1M. The 1M deserves respect, but coming from his lightly modded 135i its not enough to get too excited over. When the F20 1M or M2 (whatever they call it) comes out with its own dedicated engine, we will definitely be waiting with our checkbooks.

It's like a stock MINI Cooper S vs a GP. A customized Cooper S/135i is always welcomed and awesome. It's totally customized to the owner. But people look at a GP/1M and there's a automatic "whoa" factor.

It's also different when you're looking at it from the point of view of "do I trade in my (insert year here) 135i for the 1M?" vs. the point of view "I'm looking to buy a new car right now, and what makes more sense?" Under scenario two, the 1M is the winner if you want the performance and handling capabilities it offers. Under scenario one, I can see how it might not be different enough to justify the hit on the current 135i to trade up.
