Georgetown Hillclimb route?

Georgetown Hillclimb route?
Hi all,
I am interested in finding the route of the old Georgetown Hillclimb. I know that my dad ran it back in the 60's in his '49 MG TC (I think it was an SCCA event back then), and I would really like to give the route a go in my MCS. I was on hwy 193 from Placerville to Georgetown this weekend and am pretty sure that it was not the route. My dad described it as having a long and far less twisty route for the ride back down from the top of the climb. Any ideas? directions?
Thanks

I found a couple of historical references. In 1961 it was run on "abandoned Union Town Grade" near Coloma and in 1966 on "Old Marshall Grade." Marshall Road sounds right as it starts near Coloma at 49 and climbs to Georgetown some nine miles away. The times given in 1961 and 1966 were around two minutes so clearly it was a short stretch of the road. The nearby town of Lotus was formerly known as Union Town and Marshall.
I live eight miles from Coloma and frequently go up Marshall road to Garden Valley to the park there. I've driven from Garden Valley to Georgetown twice by routes even more twisty than 193 but I don't know if I was staying on Marshall road as I was following the directions of my semi-evil Garmin.

I could be wrong but the return route then I am sure was out of George town SE down 193 to Black Oak Mine Road, turn right, go back to Marshal Rd. Other references to the event are Marshall Grade. I really do not recall that the stage ended near Georgetown, but looking at the maps, only thing that makes sense.
As I recall the times were in the 2 minute range. I did the event in my BOSS 302 Mustang ... we drove up all the way from Van Nuys, CA. Wish I had done it a few more times.

"Prospector Road is a winding, half paved, often one lane path of a road which runs the seven mile stretch adjacent to the more traveled county built and maintained Marshall Road, constructed in 1957 to accommodate the ever increasing traffic.
Marshall Road follows a narrow cliff from Lotus to Georgetown. Prospector, often called the "old road" having been utilized since it was built by Chinese labor in the 1800's, cuts the winding mountainside connecting with Marshall at both Lotus and Garden Valley. The barely traveled road and surrounding terrain has a history as colorful as any of the gold rush era. Because of the treacherous nature of the countryside, many a wagon and later automobiles overturned, spilling their passengers down the hillsides to their death. A stagecoach stop, though moved to another site, is still visible on private acreage along Prospector Road. It was built as a half-way mark between Lotus and Garden Valley for the comfort of weary travelers." http://www.wirenot.net/X/Articles/20...ctorroad.shtml

I just found this post (and website) when searching for the Georgetown Hillclimb. I ran the hillclimb in 1971-73, if I remember correctly, and know exactly where the old course is. Your reply pretty much covered it all, and it was a fun course to run. I ran it in my 1966 Shelby GT350H that I bought used in Sacramento in 1969. Which I still own, BTW, after 50+ years.
I also still have some documents from those years in a booklet if anyone is interested in seeing them. They list the cars, drivers, times, etc, as I recall. I also found a magazine on eBay a few years ago (Sports Car Graphic ???) that shows the starting line of the hillclimb, which was next to the bar that used to be at the corner of Marshall Grade and Prospector Road. It was called the Old Prospector, IIRC, and used to be located in Coloma before Coloma was turned into a state park and the bar had to relocate. They closed many years ago and a raft rental business has occupied that building for a long time now, as mentioned. There is very little on the web about this hillclimb, and another Georgetown Hillclimb in Colorado always comes up when doing a search.
Anyhow, if anyone is interested in more information on this old hillclimb that ran for 18 years, let me know. I may be able to post some documents that I still have, if I learn how to do that on this site.

What a great coincidence, the thread had been dormant for a number of years and I just happened onto your post this morning - the first time logged onto the forum.
I'd be interested in seeing the information you have on the Georgetown hill climb. My father in law, Vince Nichols raced the hill climb for a number of years in his production modified '58 Corvette. He's in his 90's and still owns the car - although it's not been street legal for as long as I've known him (late '60's).
Congratulations on your GT350H. You had great foresight in keeping your car instead of selling it like I'm sure many have done - and kicked themselves later. I saw a beautifully restored green GT350 at a car show at a Amador County winery last year. Was that you?
Cheers,
Kim Jorgensen

Hi Kim, and thanks for the compliment about keeping my Shelby. It was one wise decision I made in my life. As for being at the Amador car show, no, that wasn't me, although I wanted to do that one for many years. My Shelby is black, with gold LeMans stripes, which is the color of the vast majority of the Hertz Shelbys produced in 1966. They were labeled GT350H, with the "H" standing for Hertz, and also referred to as "Rent -A-Racers". There were some Green GT350H cars built that year as well though.
As for my documents, please bear with me until I get a chance to scan them and learn how to attach them to my messages. This site is totally new to me and appears to be one interesting to follow. In fact, it's the only place that I have ever found anything mentioned on the Georgetown Hillclimb, in El Dorado County, Ca., that ran for 18 years, in the years that I searched the web for it. This Hillclimb was actually only a couple of miles from Coloma, Ca., the gold discovery site, and many miles away from the small town of Georgetown. But it was off of the Georgetown Divide road, aka the Marshall Grade, or Marshall Road, that ciimbs up to Georgetown, Ca. The Hillclimb route was on an old winding section of the Marshall Grade that was later bypassed to make for a less winding route that has less shear drop-offs.
When I go though my documents I'll look for your relative's name, which will hopefully be on the sheets that I saved from the years I ran it. There were several Corvettes that ran there, including the beast that the late Gene Bothello raced there. He, BTW, became the SCCA Natl. Champion one year, probably in that same Corvette. And unfortunately, they always placed me in the same class as him because it said Cobra on my 289 engine's valve covers!

Here are the time sheets on the Georgetown Hillclimb from 1970, 1971, and 1973, the years that I ran it. And your father-in-law Vince Nichols ran it these three years as well, and ran some very fast times. I hope I attached the time sheets successfully, which is my first try at doing this. My times in the GT350 were sad due to problems that took me forever to discover, after I quit running the hillclimb. Every year I experienced serious cutting out problems when climbing the course due to installing long tube Appliance headers, which when un-capped blew flames on my fuel line, percolating the gas. At that time I didn't realize that my fuel line ran along the inner frame rail of the car, which the long tube headers caused the flames to reach, and I could never understand why I never had those vapor lock problems when driving on flatter roads. So I thought the problem was caused by the steep climb of the course, which was approx. 10-12 degrees. Just young and dumb mistakes at the time.

I took a run up the old Georgetown hill climb course today. I ran it back in the early 70's in a bugeye with a 327 Chevy. Going north out of Coloma you make the right hand turn toward Marshall Grade. About 3/4 of a mile up you will see a road to the left and a building ( I think a Kayak place.) You take that left. Just past the building and in the shade of the tree on the left was the start. It was 2 miles, 19 turns, 30% grade. I officiated it in the 60's. I remember a 427 Cobra run by a man named Holt and his wife. A Ferrari with a 427 Chevy. a formula 5000, all kinds of cars. At the top of the hill there was a big tree on the right and the flagman could hide behind it. Tree is gone now. Very short slow down run before a sharp right hander. if you went left it was the dump road. Now there is a fancy entry sign. It joins into the new Marshell Grade road and back down to the start. Lots of fun.

That raft rental business back then was the Prospector bar and cafe. It originally was located in Coloma but had to move when they made Coloma the gold discovery state park. Got lubricated there many times over the years, then raced my Shelby back home on the back roads. Not too wise, but I was in my 20's and the traffic on Green Valley and Salmon Falls (my favorite!) roads was extremely light back then. That entire area was really nice back then, with several miles of winding foothill roads that were a blast to drive for those of us that liked running such roads. I took drives up to that area from Sacramento for at least 25 years.
I'll attempt to attach the cover of a Sports Car Graphic magazine I found on eBay some years ago that shows the starting line of the hill climb on its cover, looking downhill toward the start. It shows the Prospector bar on the left, with this cover story:

Well this is great, I am glad I posted a response back up above, and came back to find many more postings of memories by others, unfortunately later years than when I was there, in the early 60's. Totally cool, memory lane stuff.
The Georgetown Divide Hillclimb was truly memorable to me, and looking at the results I found a guy my parents knew from the Fresno Sports Car Club, Oran Crumley, who later moved up to the Placerville area, and who ran a Formula Vee in the Hillclimb. Here is a funny story that doesn't relate to Georgetown--this was in about 1959 or 1960, when I was a ten year old, and I remember Oran had built a tube frame reproduction of a Porsche RS550 Spyder, mid engine, and hadn't put a body on it yet, and he took me for a very fast, very memorable ride out a road west of Fresno from the ranch of another friend where we were having a barbecue--just the sort of thing kids remember. My parents weren't so impressed, I guess, but I was! Different days back then for sure!
Just looking at the results you see the kind of diversity common in sports cars at the time, Stanguellini and Lotus 18 Formula Junior cars, tons of Corvettes, etc. Wish there were more pictures! the pits were just the cars parked along the road, and if I remember, one place off the road, and you could walk up and down and look over some truly cool stuff.

There sure was a diversity of sports cars back then, and the "pits" were anywhere you could find a spot along the Divide road. Or even near the starting line as I used to in order to drop my exhaust from the headers on my Shelby. I just parked over a shallow ditch near the corner, crawled under the car, and unbolted the headers. Not exactly Laguna Seca style, but it worked.
Your personal story was interesting, and I'm sure there were many similar ones related to this hillclimb. I just wish to hell I would have taken some photos back then of the event, since I went there to see it at least 10 years, including the 3 years I ran it. I surely thought that I would have run across some of them on the web by now, but no luck, except for the Sports Car Graphic magazine I found online. There is another hillclimb named Georgetown in Colorado, which I'm sure gets a lot of people confused when researching the Georgetown Divide hillclimb. Another thing confusing is that this hillclimb was many miles from the town of Georgetown, Ca. and just outside of Coloma, Ca., the gold discovery site. But the course was off of the Georgetown Divide road, and used to be part of the original Divide road I understand. The Prospector cafe, across from the he starting line, now a raft rental business, used to be in Coloma, but had to move to another spot when Coloma became a California State Park.
Also of interest was some of the drivers that ran there. Including Alan Grant and Gene Buthello, who later became the SCCA Natl. Champion. He was from that area, in El Dorado County, and in law enforcement for many years, and passed away a few years ago. He brought a big block Corvette there every year that was a true beast, often taking fast time, and I believe his wife raced it also some years. But one year a guy showed up with a very stock looking white 289 Cobra and outran them all.
So, definitely some great times in the automotive world back then before big money ruined so many of the later events, even though there were a few that showed up at Georgetown that had a lot of money in their vehicles. But the majority of us just drove our cars up to the event and back home afterwards. As little as the old course, Prospector Rd, has changed over the years, wouldn't it be nice if some club could restart the event again someday?

Georgetown Hillclimb
Funny. Had a vintage car rally yesterday and road took us down Marshal road but I took the Prospectors road to go down.. I have relatives in Georgetown and ALWAYS take Prospectors road. So yesterday, on the way down in my rally car with all the sticker job and rally lights, an guy flagged me and I stopped....and he told me that when he grew up, his dad would back up a truck close to the road and the kids would sit on the gate and watch the racers zoom by....Small world!
Let's do it again!!!
Let's do it again!!!
Hi all,
I am interested in finding the route of the old Georgetown Hillclimb. Any ideas? directions?
Thanks

Hi Eric,
Very interesting to hear about your rally car and taking the old Prospector Road. Looks like you were having fun at Prairie City too, but all of my wild driving was on the pavement. Especially on the foothill back roads between where I live in Orangevale, and on the way to Coloma. My favorite was Salmon Falls Rd, which I was lucky never to break my neck on back in the good old days, when there was virtually no traffic on that road, or Green Valley Rd. It's changed so much now that I get depressed even driving up that way.
When I ran the hill climb for three years, there were people sitting on the hillsides all along the route, and that raft rental place, across from the starting line, used to be the Prospector Bar. I used to drive up there many a weekend, have a few, and drive home a little too fast after a stay at the bar. Not a wise thing to do, but I was much younger and dumber back then. Also had some great races on Salmon Falls road, when I happened to come across other cars, or motorcycles that wanted to jamb the turns with me. Only a few ever stayed close to me, and even one of those road racing bikes couldn't pass me one day, until I had to let off when approaching the Salmon Falls bridge, downhill, or go over the edge! Those were some great days and I too wish they'd run that event again in the future, although I'd only be a spectator.
As for my Shelby, I'm just about to sell it after 52 years of ownership!! If you'd like to see a photo of two of it, as well as the cover of a car magazine that features the Georgetown Divide Hillclimb on it's cover, email me at GT350Bill@surewest.net. BTW, I have a good friend that lives in Georgetown too, and used to go up there every year for their Founders Day event.
Thanks for writing ~ Bill

Georgetown Hillclimb
I had always heard about the Hillclimb.
Been here for 22 years and love to drive my cars on the backroad.
I actually like Prospectors roar but also Happy Valley road @ Sommerset and its wooden bridge....it eventually turns into a dirt road that goes all the way up to Grizzly flat.
Of course, salmon Falls is a classic too.
I would love your pictures.
I thought many times about maybe resurrecting the Hill climb but I do believe that it would not be possible nowadays in california....and insurance costs would be prohibitive too...
Too bad...Maybe virginia city with the ferrari club?

Hillclimb info
I found this thread recently and the stories and information are fascinating AND exactly what I was looking for.
I have been autocrossing and hillclimbing since 1972 (first hill was actually Keno Hillclimb outside of Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1974)
Quite a few years ago I thought of putting together a book on hillclimbing in the Northwest…never got it started, finally realized I am running out of time to do something.
Also- with the modern technology I am going in the direction of a website. AND, I am expanding it to “the west” California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Arizona.
You guys can’t believe how many hillclimbs have come and gone!!
I will give that web address when I get it up and going. Am in the collection phase now. (I guess that will be forever)
I am looking for hill records, results, photos, personal stories, etc….anything to do with hills you have run or know about. I have saved all the results and the magazine cover photo previously loaded on this thread.
if any of you are interested in attending hillclimbs, we have a good series running up north. nhahillclimb.org You have a great hill in northern CA, Korbel Hillclimb! And I founded Larison Rock Hillclimb in Oregon-we are going on 35 years in 2023.
Hope to connect,
Bonnie
