RANT - My 1st Accident - Less than 1 month old!!

She's too young for her first boo-boo at 28 days old.

Earlier tonight, I was on my way to meet up with some old friends from Blockbuster Video when I had just parked my car on the street. I was about to walk away when this other car was backing out of a driveway and crashed into the side of my car. The driver then took off - Hit and Run.

The driver had just dropped off 2 female teenage companions and they witnessed the whole thing as well. I stormed across the street yelling out to them "WHO WAS THAT?!?" - A question I asked twice because they were in shock at what their friend just did. They told me the driver was a friend of theirs. I told them he just commited hit and run. I picked up my phone and called 911 to report the license plate #. I managed to memorize the last 6 digits, but had forgotton the first digit.

The girls were pretty freaked out because I was seriously pissed off and reported the incident as a hit and run to 911. I also told the girls that it 'might' be a feloney, but wasn't sure.

The girls said, "I can't believe he just did that. He's kinda going through some sh*t right now..."

Me, "yeah, and? He still left the scene. It's still a hit and run no matter what. It would be different if he had stayed to speak with me. But no, he took off from the scene."

-----------------------------------
found on internet: Felonies result when the Hit and Run incident causes serious bodily injury or death. Misdemeanors are the most common Hit and Run charges and result from minimal property damage with no physical injuries.
-----------------------------------

The girls quickly got on their cellphones to reach him. I was on the phone with AAA trying to start a claim when he came back to the scene. It took him 20 mins to return.

The driver claimed that he didn't know he had crashed into my car. He thought it was just him hitting the brakes too hard. F*cking moron.

From what I can tell under street lights, the damage looks mostly cosmetic. The driver side front blinker light is broken (located on the black plastic rims, above the tire area.) I can only hope there's no further damage to the interior frame. It's too dark outside to see if there are dents and whatnot. I tried to take pics from my camera phone.

The driver turned out to be some 17 yr old high school kid who's about to turn 18 in the next few days. Happy f*cking birthday, kid. I'm sure your parents will enjoy that new insurance premium.

To rub salt further into his guilt, he asked what my license plate numbers were for his report to AAA insurance.

Me, "I don't have plates yet because I just bought this NEW car last month. I have to give you my VIN number."

Oh no :( Darn kids. At least if you were parked it's non-moving and shouldn't affect your insurance!

frumpysf,

Looks like you handled the situation well. I am not sure I would have kept my cool as well as you did.

I can definitely sympathize with your accident, but from the looks of the damage I would give the kid the benefit of doubt. Looks like a very slow speed bump. You don't mention what kind of car it was, but if it was a mid-size or larger I can see where he might not have noticed that he hit something. I would have hoped the paasengers would have contacted him on their own, but I guess we'll never know about that. Glad you witnessed it.

The car that hit me was a 4-dr 1983 BMW 533-e/528-e (I forgot which model #, but it was definitely a 5-series). The damage to his car? A scratch on his bumper. When he collided into my car in reverse, he hit my car hard enough that I saw my driver side rock upwards at least a few inches. I was standing on the sidewalk, 2 feet from my car. It was dark, but it wasn't THAT dark.

I saw my car for the first time in broad daylight and found another damaged portion. As it turns out, the douchebag hit my car so hard, my headlight washer spout no longer retracts properly. However, it still functions with the water spraying out. I have no idea how much this will cost.....

Here's a better daytime picture of the damage on the driver's side trim. Even though the bulb is exposed, the light still works.

PS - the hood is unlocked in pic above, thus the wide gap.

Thats unfortunate but I am sure it will be a somewhat easy fix. Still a hassle for sure and on a brand new MINI.

Oh please there is no way you could hit something that hard & not know it . I mean any driver who feels a bump is going to look back to verify that they didn't hit anything. My guess is the kid looked back but thought he could get away with it. I am glad you were there frumpy

Frumpy, I don't know if you have a shop in mind, but I've used Anthony's Auto Craft in San Rafael before (on a bimmer, not the Mini) and would definately go back. They stand by their work and have a lifetime warranty on it - I'm very picky and they have accomodated me. They work on all sorts of exotics and cars for the dealers, nice people too. You do get what you pay for and they are not cheap, but the other guy and his insurance should be covering it (and a rental car) so that should not be an issue.

Here is a link to someone else's review of them so you don't just have to take my word for it: http://www.yelp.com/biz/9bo4VVrtnSL3..._source=google

Best of luck and sorry that it happened, guy doesn't deserve to be driving if he would hit and run or not even know if he hit something/someone

Bamatt, would you claim the same thing if it had been an SUV? I have seen plenty of parking lot accidents where the back of the car showed absolutely no damage, but the car that was hit has some very noticable damage. Ususally this is the case because the car that was hit is hit on a side panel and the other car is hitting it with its bumper. So the claim that it wasn't noticed could be a legitimate claim. Was it right to leave without checking it out....definitely not. But please don't crucify the other driver without at least giving him the benefit of an explaination.

I am sorry about the accident. I don't know that I could have handled it as well if I had witnessed it on my 3 year old MINI, much less a brand new one.

The thing that doesn't make sense is that the kid first tells me:

"I didn't know i hit your car" excuse.

Then, after reporting in our claims and prior to both of us leaving the scene. The kid then says to me:

"Well, I did circled around the block to come back to check for damages. I didn't see anything and I didn't see anybody standing around so I left."

Me: "I was standing across the street talking to YOUR friends after you LEFT the scene."

Him: "Oh, I wasn't looking at that side of the street, only this side..."

First he tell me he didn't hit my car. Then he claims he came back to look for damages. If he didn't KNOW he hit my car, how would he know to circle around to look for damages??

Just to clarify frumpy, I was not condoning or endorsing what the kid did. Just wanted to make sure folks realized that it could have happened as he first claimed.

Hope all goes good with getting it repaired !

It's all good. I'm not the type of person to take things so literally based on text via internet. I've seen too much unnecessary flame wars start because of that.

What he first claimed, I'd give him the benefit of doubt too. But it's the claim that he "circled around to check for damages and look for someone" that threw me off guard. Very contradicting...

Frankly yes.... I think it's quite difficult to push in the side of someones vehicle & not at least catch a hint that something odd is happening behind you (if you are in a complete state of sobriety :impatient )

As for me crucifying the driver my words were pretty tame & far from scathing

F*cking unbelievable!!! My rental car got hit in front of my house while I was asleep on Sat. morning! And no, I didn't get the extra insurance - thinking all I'm going to be doing was driving to work and back home for 4 days. ARGH!!!

At least the guy left a note w/ contact info...

Sorry to hear about your incredibly bad luck. Was it your own rental or provided by the repair place? Many credit cards automatically provide free extra insurance when you rent a car (their own insurance, not the rental company's). All of my own credit cards do and it is pointless for me get extra coverage when I rent a car.

I'd be shocked if your insurance company didn't have a policy that covers non-owned cars. As long as you don't let others driver your rental car, you should never have an issue with a car you rent. If you have an insurance company that does not cover non-owned cars in your care, custody, or control, switch companies.

C'mon, Scott, get real. Of course, the kid knew he was in an accident. Even his friends were surprised he just drove off. Making lame excuses for the kid is half the problem. The 17 year old kid should have his license revoked.

I posted later that the kid was definitely in the wrong and knew it. I just hate seeing people crucify another before having all of the info available. I used to have a 78 Chev Caprice that my in-laws gave my wife to haul the kids in and I can tell you with all honesty that my wife could back into another cars fender and not feel a thing. My VW was in the body shop for a week after that one.........

If it makes you feel any better, I bought my 2004 MCS on October 18th, 2003.

On October 19th an uninsured driver in an old beat up Mustang turned across 3 lanes of traffic to hit my brand new < 50 miles car in the left rear quarter panel.

Yup, less than 24 hours. That's gotta' be a record.
