Upstate NY trip
Upstate NY trip
Last Friday I drove from Vermont to Syracuse NY and back during a fortuitous break in the winter weather. Crossed Lake Champlain to Plattsburgh and then followed Route 3 thru the Adirondacks expecting a nice twisty mountain road. It was disappointingly straight, though drivers of lesser cars seemed to have a hard time with the mild curves. Did a LOT of passing, but it was a pretty boring trip. Coming back with a new pup I took the northern way, taking Route 11 all the way from Watertown to the Vermont state line. No hills, few curves, but some great scenery of working farms along the way.
Averaged 29.7mpg with a lot of speed up, slow down for farm vehicles, speed up again. This in contrast to the 36.1mpg I got taking the Interstate and engaging the cruise control. But my Mini was as comfortable at the end of the trip as it was at the start, so this little guy might be a good long distance vehicle afterall!

Dude there are no twisties in NY state, I have been totally searchin for them. Everything people suggest is either boring or just too, too short

You guys are just trying in the wrong area. The hills around Watkins Glen/Corning/Elmira are excellent. I went out for a nice drive this weekend and had a blast. The ADK area is just too big and sparsely occupied for good twisties.
I got Lots of Twisties up here in the CNY area (around Syracuse).. if you're in the area, come to one of my rallies or send me a PM and I'll lead you around and show you where all these roads are... if you want to know more about Syracuse Rallies send me an e-mail at SyracuseMINIs@gmail.com
But I highly recomend the Otisco Lake area, East of 81 , Route 80, Route 13, 41, 41a( near Skaneateles Lake)

Anyone who dismisses the entire state of New York as having no twisties is not looking. You perhaps meant that there are no twisties NEAR YOU...
The entire Adirondack park, (the largest state park in the United States), is full of nearly deserted, twisty mountain roads that come close to matching the vaunted Dragon. The scenery is spectacular, and you'll be turning so much, your arms will look like Popeye's. You'll likely get car-sick while you're at it, too. I just came through many of these this weekend, as a matter of fact. I could recommend plenty of routes that will satisfy your cravings for twisties.
All you have to do is:
pick
up
a
map.
The Catskills also have many of these same types of roads.
Yes, you will have to drive many hours to get to these roads, so make it a weekend trip. Stay up in Lake Placid, and use that as a base camp for your motoring journeys.
Again, if you can't figure this out by simply looking at a good quality map, let me know, I can definitely help you.
I cannot recommend the DeLorme New York State Atlas and Gazetteer highly enough for any serious motorist, (there are versions of this for many other states, as well).

Most definitly will!
The east of 81 run will be coming up in September...I've already started picking roads for it, now i just gotta find a navigator and test the roads out...
If you guys can't wait till then... since neither of you were at the April run, I could take you on that....That has some FUN roads (you'll welcome the brief rest you get at a stop sign)......How does Saturday July 28th sound, 10 AM, at Marcellus County Park followed by lunch at Dino...Total Run would be 2 hours exactly....

The first Route was Really good....the second route had some really nice areas, but wasn;t properly organized....we ran into a "Bridge closed ahead" sign....40 MINIs doing 30 point turns on a narrow road is a very interesting site.... but Im sure it should be good by now...if any of you are going to be doing the routes let me know, I'd be up for going at them again..
