New Hack/Mod - Qi Wireless Charging in Armrest

I just got my 2013 Countryman a few weeks ago, and I'm one of those folks that's chosen a Nokia Lumia 920 over iPhone. Bluetooth integration is great, and other than having no way to invoke voice commands to send a text, everything in the car works perfectly (audio streaming, etc), other than having to plug it in to charge.

The Nokia has a wireless charger built in though, so I decided to hack together a mount in the armrest of the car. It's not pretty yet, I wanted to see if the functionality worked first.

Install (parts list below):
  • Remove the iPhone tray from the armrest between the driver and passenger seats
  • The wireless charger should just about fit. I had to shave the head end a bit as the armrest tapers towards the front
  • Plug the USB cable into the wireless charger, and run it out of the back of the armrest
  • Plug the Lighter adapter into the power outlet behind the armrest, and the USB cable into that
  • Use the double-stick tape to affix the galaxy player case to the wireless charger plate; I had to put it near the top for the charging coil to line up with the phone
  • Drop the phone in and go
I need to make it prettier just on general principles, but at this point I like it even better than having a dedicated iPhone dock as I don't have to do anything other than set it down in the armrest and close it up.

I can take pictures if anyone would like.

Parts:
1) Griffin short lighter to USB plug

2) Qi Wireless charging pad (usb powered)

3) Case for Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0

4) Some double-back sticky tape to connect the player case to the charging pad

Hey jameslew
I found your post while searching for USB powered Wireless Charger on the net as I was thinking about fitting out my car with a Wireless Charger for for my Lumia 920 also.

I actually joined this site just to reply to your post.

I would like to see some photos from your mod if you dont mind, as it will give me a few ideas of my own hopefully.

Cheers.

I'd be interested in seeing some pics too. Was thinking of doing a wireless mod as well but wasn't sure the best place to start.
