Has Your Nav Screen Stayed Dark For A Long Time?

About a week ago the Nav Screen on my '04 MCS stopped displaying the Mini Insignia when a door was opened. Also no longer does the legal disclaimer screen get displayed which you have to "ACCEPT" to continue. It is only after more than a minute or so after the engine has been running that the screen finally lights up, displaying the local map. My MCS is almost 3-1/2 years old and has 42,000 miles.

I wonder if this is an early symptom of a screen tube beginning to fail.

Has anyone else experienced this delayed lighting up of their Nav Screen? If so, did you dealer repair it satisfactorily? Under warranty?

I'd appreciate any helpful comments.

Thanks !

That is not a typical failure symptom for an LCD screen. More likely something is going wrong with the Nav unit itself, and you should have the dealer check it while you are still under the 4 year/50K warranty.

Do you mean that you previously needed to accept the disclaimer screen, and now you no longer have to? Is the map now displaying distances in yards instead of feet? If so, the Nav unit had reset itself into UK/Euro mode. That should not have happened, and along with the delayed screen display indicates some problems with the Nav unit.

By the way, the more recent versions of the Nav firmware automatically close the disclaimer screen after about 8 seconds. Older firmware required you to manually dismiss the disclaimer screen, except in Euro mode there is no disclaimer screen at all.

You will probably have better luck in the 1st Generation section. This is for 2007 MINIs and few of us have Navs yet.

First places I'd look is the parking brake and gear position sensor wires.

The difference in the UK/Euro mode is distance in yards (not meters). Also the onboard computer does calculation with UK imperial size gallons, so its numbers for range and consumption will be off.
