speaker upgrades
anyone know any kind of speakers(Front and back) that will fit with no or very little basic modification?

We replaced all of them with Infinity Reference that we got from Crutchfield. It didn't take us too long to do the replacements by ourselves...the most difficult was to figure out where to put the crossovers. But with that problem solved, it was a sinch to put in.
So where did you put the crossovers?
how do you like it? hows the sound?

Sorry guys, I was out of it for a bit....Ok first question..We love the sound! For a very inexpensive upgrade, it is a great one!
We have an '04. So what I ended up doing for the crossover was drilling a small hole in the bottom of the door pocket and fed the wires up through into the door pocket. We then put the crossovers behind the armrest/door handle with sticky tape. Now it won't get wet when it rains. When Soulfire comes home from work today, I will go out and take some pictures of it so you can see what I mean if you want.
They were Infinity Reference Series speakers. In the front doors 6010cs This includes tweeters and crossovers as well. The rear ones we orderd were not the 6x9 (Jay thought they were round in the back as well) but the back were 6012si. The round ones fit fine, but I don't know if it is the same model number for the 6x9s
We got them from Crutchfield. Got them really quickly, did the work ourselves, and REALLY enjoy them. The total cost was i believe $300.
If you have any problems or questions if you decide to do the work yourself (which is pretty easy I must say, PM me and I can hopefully help!)

Side note; I also moded the OEM tweeter bracket. I carefully removed the OEM tweeter from its bracket. Not the bracket that is on the door, but the bracket that goes into the bracket on the door.
Once removed, I temporarly put the new tweeter into the tweeter bracket to see what angle I wanted it once installed. Once I got the tweeter in the location I wanted, I removed it from the tweeter bracket, took a Dremel drum sanding bit and slowly made it bigger to hold the tweeter without removing clips that are on the tweeter bracket. Those clips hold the tweeter bracket into the door bracket. I also used the OEM wires that went from the HU to the speaker.
The reason I put the crossover inside is because I have had crossovers get wet and short out from the rain and stuff. It has been about a year now and no problems with wires, shorts, or even people noticing that there is a crossover there.

i dremelled out my brackets, just like you guys did, and actually used the same infinity reference separates in the front as you did, which are great. i also hack-sawed through a narrow piece of the bracket, to facilitate getting the stupid tweeters to fit.
w/ my crossovers, i used the industrial-strength velcro (not the auto-strength stuff) to put them on the metal at the bottom of the door, surrounding the whole thing and the wires w/ a saran-wrap substitute, and it worked great w/ no noise.
my rears are infinity kappas 6x9's, the 693.7i's. they are absolutely awesome, except that they are 2-ohm loads and you need an outboard amp to run them. the bass is so good from these in the relatively well-sealed MCS's rear ports that i almost don't need my subwoofer. yeah right! (no really, they're really good)

In my Mazda, I have Infiniti Reference Components in the front with some Reference 3-ways in the back and I have been really happy for the 2 years they have been installed. They are a great speaker for the price.
I got them pretty cheap on ebay, I think about $250 total. I would add an amp to whatever speaker upgrade you do.

that's a good idea for a quick fix. it's nice to have the tweeters separate though for power handling if you have a power amp and for imaging (tweeter closer to your ear).
i decided to go against the baffles after some people suggested that it really buffered the low end as well as the mid-bass. have you noticed that it's lacking w/ yours or not really affected?

but quick is where its at
.I really can't compare with or without baffles, as I bought these with and did not remove them. However I didn't expect much out of 5 1/4" speakers as far as any kind of deep bass goes. I don't like the super low bass the young people are are doing these days anyways, tight correct music reproduction is best.
i don't disagree at all. that's why i have a 10" sub in a sealed box. just so happens that it's an infinity kappa perfect thriving on about 350 watts from a small amp and sounds precise from jazz to the occasional rap! all removeable for needed trunk space, of course. what can i say... it's a hobby
The original poster was asking about a speaker install with minimal modifications.....I put in speakers and simply unplugged the stock one and plugged in the new, and left the tweeters alone.
I have the stock HU w/CD on my '04 cooper, no HK or Nav , no extra amp and simply replaced the front 5 1/4's with Infinity 6002si shallow mount COAXIAL 6 1/2 inch two-way speakers and made styrofoam spacers with glued on felt so the styfoam wouldn't squeak...cost me $80 US....very efficient speakers, greatly added to the clarity and brilliance and plenty enough bass for my liking coming from the rear stock speakers.....not into spending $1000 on the sound system...I left the 1' stock tweeters operational too..very easy wiring, no extra wiring or mounting of new crossover....very good sound overall...very efficient speakers that go well with the puny power the stock HU puts out and the extra brilliance of the coaxial's tweeters plus the car's stock tweeters sounds nice to my ears
