Navigation & Audio Navi update 27.1
e-mini-Austin the only place to get a legit copy of the DVD is a dealer. I'd call CLASSIC MINI in Ohio. There was a person on ebay selling what looked like real DVDs but it turned out to be copies. The new 2006-2 DVD really makes the v27 come to life.
Navteq
The Navteq web site offers v. 2006-2 for $199. I don't know if Classic is cheaper.

And does anyone know how to enable the icons. I selected disable icons and now can't get them back.

The icons automatically show up after you do a search for a specific category (restaurants, gas stations, etc.)... after that search is complete, the map will show you the location of any of those types of venue on the map with an icon. Many people (including me) find those icons to be very annoying, so that's why they give you a "disable icons" option.
Just do another search by category and you'll see icons again.

As for the difference between 27.0 and 27.1, as I understand it, it's mostly for bug fixes, not features... but satellite connections are much quicker and more reliable. I don't use it yet (my MINI is in the shop), but I will be very soon.
this might be a stupid question, but how do you tell what version of the nav ok you have? in the settings menu, it says 4 1/70.
I have an 06 mcs that has an 06/06 build date. I went through all the settings, and found that the perspective mode was already there, it just had to enabled.
But i'm seeing people searching for restaurants and stuff, how do you do that? this would be my other stupid question.

ok cool. So then this update can apply to me. The suck part about it is that i found out that I have a 2005-2 map disk. I figured since i just got the car that I would have had a newer map disk.
thanks, mdsbrain. Maybe i'll see u out on the road sometime!

Here I go again.
Burned a CD with Alcohol 120%, and using the CD/DVD manager it shows that there's 288Mb worth of files on there, but my PC says it's got 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free space. Is that normal?
Tried to download the ISO version, but that site is having 'technical difficulties'. :impatient
Arg.

ISO version of the 27.1 update file is gone?
FYI, I think FileUpdate has trashed the ISO version of the file that used to live here. Can we Mac users just download the ZIP file and use that to make an ISO version or some other kind of disc image Toast can use? I just went to the trouble of downloading and installing the v27 update, and now I'm kicking myself for not checking for later updates first....
Edit -- My bad: this link works, but it points to a .zip file containing .mdf/.mds images, that require the program "Alcohol 120%". I don't have a link for an ISO.
I updated Post 21 so that it points to a new source for the ISO, which works today: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9X481J1K

I had no idea you could erase them and thought that I was doomed to be displaying local drinking opportunities to my passengers forevermore.
Anyway, I could imagine that this feature would be really helpful to someone in a strange town desperately looking for restaurants or gas stations - but having the icons on my map daily is royal PITA, I must agree. The "disable icons" button is essential.

I bought the new map for the NAV. I had already installed 27.1 with the great help of Mr Edly and MDSBRAIN--Very much thanks again. I turned on the persprctive, but do not see any difference in the old map and the new as far as perspective. I tried holding down the "Menu" button with the "set" highlighted and cannot get back into the area to make sure perspective was selected. It just will not give me that menu . Any thoughts--I will re-install 27.1 and try again

I agree, Bill. The previous 'solution' was to search for something which had fewer results (i.e. sports parks) so at least the screen wasn't filled up with icons!
Now to see if I can get the ISO version of V27.1 to work.:impatient

Here are the steps to enable perspective view:
- Bring up the main menu
- Select Set
- Press and hold the MENU button for about 10 seconds. The service menu should appear.
- Scroll all the way down to the second page.
- Select Perspective and turn it on.
- Bring up the GPS navigation screen and display a map
- Press the **** and select Map positioning
- There should now be three selections: Pointing North, Travel direction, and Perspective
Question from a mac user- I burned the two files to a disc with the stock Mac mini software (8x was slowest avail. speed) but nothing happens when I follow the update directions. I see from earlier posts that toast is successful using the copy tab, but I don't want to spend $80 just to do the update.
I can always burn the files on a PC at work, but I wondered what other mac users could do if they don't have toast.
Thanks for any advice.

OK, switched to ignition positon 2 ( I was previously following these directions) and inserted a disc with the two mdf/mds files burned to it, just by drag and burn method. The nav screen reads "incorrect cd/dvd" (I'm giving it 10 minutes... nope, nada)
Do i not have the files in the correct ISO format? They read as unix executable file. Maybe the only way is to burn with toast, or from a PC?
I do speak computer, just not very fluent...

The disc will not work with the mdf/mds files on it. When properly burned, it will have 376 files, 110 folders as shown in post #63. You can burn the mdf/mds image using Alcohol 120% (I used the free trial version).
This sounds like the same issue we had when v27 came out. Edge made an ISO version for the MAC guys and that did the trick. Although using different options in Toast seemed to work with the mdf/mds files. If I get a minute today I'll convert the files into an iso which should make for an easier burn.
