iPod Sound Level

I have the Ipod adapter in the glove box and I've noticed that you have to turn the radio way up to get a loud ipod sound. For example, i need to remember to turn down before I switch to radio or Sirius or it will really be extremely loud. I made sure my volume is all the way up on my ipod? any place else to adjust this on the h/k system?

Hmm, I have the iPod adapter and the volume is pretty much the same as the radio or CD (I don't have Sirius) - I switch between them all the time and never have to change the volume between any of them. My iPod volume is around the middle to a bit more but not max.

Perhaps it is a pinched wire or something having to do with the adapter install? I thought the headunit would make all the output the same anyway?

Volume

My volume is consistent between IPOD, CD, and RADIO.

One suggestion is that you can "auto-level" the volume levels when you import the songs into your I-Tunes. You might give that a try then re-download the songs into your Ipod.

Because others don't appear to have the same problem you do, I suspect it has more to do with the sound level of the music transferred from your computer to the Ipod.

I *think* there's a 'level' setting for the Aux - try holding down the music symbol button and scrolling with the < and > keys.

Mine is about the same level as the rest with the ipod near max level.

If you are using the Aux input, hit the 'note' button and scroll past the bass, treble, balance and fader functions until you get to AUX LEVEL. Set it to 4 or 5.

You guys are way off.

The ipod adaptor uses a line level in. There is no adjustment for it on the ipod nor the radio. The actual mp3 (or aac) file must be encoded to the max non clip level using soundforge if you want more volume. The majority of files are not to this level, and you hear the difference. There in no adjustmen anywhere that effects this - everything that was suggested is irrelevant - volume, level, auto-level - these only effect headphone out - nothing effects line level, hense the definition of it. The radio has a level adjustment for AUX only - but the ipod adaptor runs through the cdchanger input...no level adjustment.

I always have my iPod on max volume when I use it in the car. You get the best sound quality that way - higher signal to noise ratio. I have the standard stereo, and I can definitely get the iPod volume way higher than I would ever want it.

Okay, everybody take a deep breath...

It has been suggested in other posts on this topic that your iPod's volume should be 7/8ths, or almost full volume.

Since it is a line-level in, the signal from your iPod isn't amplified at all. So unless you've got your iPod's volume almost all the way, yes, it'll sound quieter through your stereo.

7/8ths volume. No need to re-rip your MP3's or AAC files at all. That would be a waste your precious motoring time!

Motor on!

You guys don't get it. Volume on the ipod has absolutley no effect on line out level.

That's because the majority posting to this thread do not have the iPod adapter, they have the AUX adapter.

The iPod adapter uses the iPod dock connector on the bottom of the iPod, the AUX uses the headphone jack.

You can not do anything to your iPod when it is connected to the iPod adapter, volume, track, backlight, nada.

Yup, I'm talking about running mine through the aux input. Sorry for the mixup... Now I have one more reason to prefer my setup to the adapter.

Yeah, me too.

But I'm a little confused. Can you hae Sirius AND the iPod adaptor? I thought that you couldn't combine the two.

re-ripping

K. has operated under the assumption that everyone's I-POD is connected via the I-Pod adaptor, not the headphone out. Headphone out allows you to adjust the I-Pod's sound level.

With the I-Pod adaptor, you will have to re-rip the music. I-tunes (the software on your computer) will allow you to auto-level the music source data before you re-upload it to your I-pod. Once it's on the I-Pod connected to the I-Pod adaptor, your only control is via the radio volume adjustement.

No, some people just don't read. THIS THREAD is about the IPOD ADAPTOR, if you would care to read the initial posters questions. REAL SIMPLE.

arbitrary

Actually, K. by reading the initial post this is truly a H.K. issue. Any and all posters who responded about ipod anything should be bludgeoned to death and set on fire. Then, their still-twitching remains should be shot and left for hungry vultures. (Myself and yourself included).

An absolute abolishion of any post that does not exactly contain the phrase "Harmon/Kardon" should ensue.

The original post (a H/K post, by the way) has since spawned quite a discussion on sound levels from I-pods connected to MINI Coopers, and has warranted all the replies it has received.

a: if you are using the aux input to the radio.. there is a aux volume adjustment available in the same section as bass, treble, etc.

b: using the headphone output is the worst way to get out of the ipod.. the audio quality it horrible!!!! The line output should be sufficient to drive the aux input to a decent level with much better quality.

I am using the belkin 12 volt converter and it has a bit of gain in it;'s output, so my aux volume is around 3 to match the cd player, radio etc.

I am getting SO tired of your posts, K... I have, occasionally, found some good info in some of them, but the amount of annoyance you cause is just about enough.

I'm one step away from putting you on my "ignore" list. I've recently noticed you posting away in a frenzy, apparently in order to get your status upgraded to 6th gear, which seems pretty meaningless.

ON TOPIC INFO:

MINI iPod Adapter - uses the direct line-level output from the iPod docking connector. No adjustments at the iPod are possible while in use. You CAN re-generate your music files on your computer (MP3, etc.) at a higher volume level if you like, but I think most folks using the MINI iPod Adapter are happy with the relative volume level of their more recent music files. (Recent digital releases are being generated at a higher average amplitude than older releases, in general.)

MINI Auxiliary Input - uses the headphone output of the iPod (or other portable audio device). The iPod (audio device) functions normally, and anything you can do to adjust the sound for headphone use can be done while using the Auxiliary input. The previous recommendations for adjusting the iPod volume level make sense. Also, keep in mind that radio broadcasts typically use amplitude compression processing of the signal to make the quiet parts of the music louder, so there's less variation between loud and quiet sounds. This has the effect of generally sounding louder. If you're really ambitious, you could re-generate your music files in your computer, using a software amplitude-compression effect device, to get this same kind of sound for playing in the car. (I've actually considered this several times, but I have over 2500 songs encoded, with still more on CDs on my shelf, and I only have the one iTunes library to use for listening on PC, thru headphones, and in the car, so it would not be efficient. I would love it if some aftermarket company made a plug-thru amplitude compressor/EQ to go between the iPod docking connector and whatever you plug into it. )

To make matters more complicated, there are also other adaptors on the market that can be used with iPods, that may or may not have differing features & functionality.

Hope this helps!

_Dave_

Then please do. What's really old are posts like this complaining about posts! I'm not posting for any status, you're right it is meaning less - I have a little over 1000 posts here, whoopdie do. I have over 30,000 on my board, 10,000 on others. If you don't like a poster, fine - that's EXACTLY what the ignore feature is for.

Why don't you go stick your hand in the lawnmower if you feel such a need to express your pointless frustration?

I can read, and I do read; I just don't know all of the arcane terminology for MINI's stereo input options. The aux input sure seems like an "iPod adapter" to me, and I didn't realize that MINI had assigned that particular terminology to their lame version. Boy do I feel like an *** for trying to help.
