Do I have the infamous speaker rattle?

So prior to getting my MINI this March I had heard lots of people mention an annoying speaker rattle. I feared this but hoped for the best. I have incredible ears in the sense that I hear every little thing.

Recently I have begun hearing a noise from the passenger side area. If my head is facing forward (i.e. looking at the road) the sound seems to be coming from the tweeter area. If I turn my head to look at the tweeter the sound then seems to shift closer to the speedometer.

I have to ask you guys to describe what that speaker rattle sounds like. At first I thought a speaker was messed up cause it sounded almost like a constant hiss/distortion. But then I killed the radio and it was still going strong.

It doesn't usually happen at low speeds but once I am up near 80mph, there it is.

What is it and what's the fix? Thanks in advance.

Matt

i think u do. easy test, as soon as u start hearing the rattle, press down on the passenger lower speaker and it should go away. i had my rattle and i didnt think it could be my speaker, but i still heard it even when i turned my radio off. then i pushed on the speaker and its gone.

i read somewhere where a guy posted his how to on sticking dampening material all around the outside of the speaker. i cant find the link though.

let us know if that works,.

I've had three 2005 MINIs with the H/K system in them and they ALL had the silly rattle problem really bad (you'd think that MINI would of caught on to this problem by now and fixed the stupid thing! ). I took one of the cars into the dealer and asked them to fix it, but it wasn't much better (all they did was insert some small rubber pieces in-between the speaker grill). However, I've since done the fix shown on Josh Wardell's web site and they're all perfect now. No rattles whatsoever and they all sound great!

The fix took me about an hour to do both doors and less than $5 in materials from our local craft store (i.e. Michael's). I used some 2mm sticky backed rubber foam in place of the sound dampening stuff (as I couldn't find it locally) and it seems to have worked just great.

It's a very easy fix (only it's a real pain to get the arm rest off on the 05 door panels) and one that makes a huge difference to the sound quality of the H/K system.

I don't have the H/K system, not that it matters. I will try pressing on the speaker grill to see if it stops and know that it is the culprit. If it is and it continues I'll use the fix method from that link.

Many thanks guys.
