R56 Base Stereo - No Sound
R56 Base Stereo - No Sound
Hi All, forum noob here, but not a Mini noob. This is my 4th Mini! '09 S, manual. Just did a ton to it to get it through state inspection, so it's running great. BUT... (and yes I searched the forum first)
I am suddenly getting zero sound from the stereo. It worked until a few days ago. No amp that I can find, so I am assuming this is the base stereo system. It lights up, I can change stations / inputs, etc. I get no sounds AT ALL in the car, as in, if I leave the lights on, or the boop-beep-boop-beep when you first put the key in. Nuthin. Checked all of the fuses. As far as I can tell the system hasn't been touched (no speaker changes). Help! And TIA!

Based on the (limited) information you provided, I'd say that either the head unit (or its internal amplifier component) OR a potentially existing amplifier (whether factory or aftermarket) OR both is/are fried.
I'd start by checking what the car came with from factory (and report that here). Then I'd look again for any amplifiers at all possible places (there is only one location for the factory amplifier).
And while I'm at it, I'd look whether there is sound arriving at the x9331 connector:
If not, you're likely looking at ripping out parts of the front interior trim in order to get to the head unit to check that.
If yes, you know the head unit operates fine and there is indeed an amp (which does not) somewhere between the connector and the speakers (on the assumption that it is rather unlikely the wires from the X9331 connector to the speakers have all been cut at the same time).
Your wording does not rule out that you didn't know where to look for the factory amp in case of an HK/Hifi system (not to mention their other telltale sign, i.e tweeters). Nor does it rule out that an aftermarket amplifier has indeed been fitted somewhere else which you didn't find. Also: have you indeed checked ALL fuses, i.e. including any on the rear side of the head unit?

OK, X9331 connector located and "tested." Not sure exactly what I was seeing, but there's definitely some kind of signal arriving there at various pins. A very weak signal but more than zero. Not sure what this means! Had to put the multimeter on its lowest setting to get a reading.

Regarding the X9331 connector, please note:
- there are power wires running through it so make sure to look up the pin diagram (search NAM for that) and avoid shorting those with ground at all cost!
- there is DC voltage on the sound wires, even without sound, as soon as the head unit is activated (e.g. when unlocking the doors). Using a simple multimeter will only provide limited feedback. If possible, I'd use a short peace of double wire to connect each pair or speaker pin outs to a spare speaker to check whether there is sound. If you have no spare speaker: the top speaker in the passenger side door can be removed easily with minimal effort.

Ended up replacing the head unit (which I was going to do anyway for CarPlay functionality). Speakers all work fine; indeed, sound quite good and far better than stock. So in the end it was indeed a dead head. And yes I checked the fuse, and it was not blown (which makes sense, since the unit still turned on).

Hello. Did you find the isssue? I have same issue.
Sorry if I was unclear. By having searched the forums, and indicating that it's a base audio system, I meant I indeed had searched for a factory amp after the forum showed me where, and found none. It's a pretty low-optioned car, and doesn't have the A-pillar tweeters. Other searches also suggest that the head unit is toast, and it's not the fuse. Not sure what the x9331 connector is, though. Will search that up, so thanks. In any event, I acquired an aftermarket head unit, but have not yet installed it. Because I do not enjoy taking apart the dash on these cars lol. BTDT. Will update with whatever I find / solve / set on fire.

Head unit was dead, and no it was not the fuse on the back. Replaced it with a much more modern unit. A lot of work but happy with the results.
