Speaker failure

Hello All,

I have the HK system in my '11 MCS. My lower driver door speaker seems to have failed making a buzzing sound along with trying to create what the other speakers do. I see a direct replacement HK unit is about $80 (651 39 194 841), although I haven't seen what the specs on the unit are. Meanwhile, Crutchfield are offering a lot of options from common brands usually as a 2 woofer 2 tweeter and crossover set with many options between $80-150. The woofers are usually polypropylene (what's the original?) and are usually 5-1/4 or 6-1/2 inch diameter. Crutchfield say the woofer fits but are they a simple drop-in using the same screw positions and will the connectors match?

Obviously if I went with something like a JBL here I'd change both woofers and leave the tweeters and crossovers out. Trying to keep it simple but wondering if this would be a worthwhile slight upgrade.

cheers

I would just go to bavsound for the upgrade and replace the one speaker since you already have H/K (otherwise i would replace the whole thing with upgrade) https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...t/65139194841/

Thanks, but the BavSound is a bit too pricey for me at $280 + tax.

Do you happen to know what the HK speaker is made from and is it 150mm as I saw elsewhere?

cheers

Ok,

6.5" is the lower woofer size.

Have you swapped the left and right speakers to verify the fault does indeed lie within the left speaker? It wouldn't be the first 2nd generation MINI power amplifier (Hifi or HK) to die.

There should be plenty speakers that fit physically. FWIW, these fitted in my R56LCI without issues. Unless Crutchfield (or any other manufacturer) explicitly state that the acoustic characteristics are also identical to the factory speakers, I'd assume that "drop in" is limited to physical dimensions only and not sound. In fact, speaker sound can vary substantially.

Have you read this thread or at least its opening post? According to it, both the Hifi and HK systems heavily tune the signal (taking into consideration the acoustic characteristics of the factory speakers). This may amplify even further any acoustic differences between any replacement and factory speakers.
