I recently figured out how to do this on my 2017 F60 and it is glorious. I'll drop some breadcrumbs to help anyone interested. I know next to nothing about how any of this really works, so read at your own risk and beware of omissions or errors.
The version number you need to check is under Navigation. For example: Navigation -> Settings -> Position and Software Version -> Software Version. If you have a version that starts with "NBTevo", that's the newer head unit. "WAY" versions are the previous generation. I know nothing about the process for WAY, but for NBTevo, you will need at least version "V" (e.g, "NBTevo_Vxxxxxx")

I'm a tech guy but not knowledgeable of the tech details of our Minis. I find it a bit odd that your 2017 F60 has the new NBTevo while my 2019 F57 (Iconic) has the EntryNav2 WAY. Does anyone know why this might be? From the threads I've read, it is apparently more complicated to get full screen CarPlay on the MINI EntryNav2 WAY than on the NBTevo units.
Hi, I’m brand new to this sort of thing, but just saw a video by a forum member (Troy I think) who has full screen CarPlay and also just fitted the new digital mini instrument cluster... the two things I’d love on my F56. I just checked and I have the NBTEvo screen fitted, my car is a 2017 pre LCi 210 works and it has the mediaXL nav pack but it’s not touch screen. Is CarPlay achievable?

I own a 2017 F60 with the 8" touch screen headunit and previous activated carplay with the usb method that I purchased elsewhere. When I did the activation of Carplay at that time, my version of headunit is 2017-1 NBTevo_J163831.
Because, I had a software update on my headunit at the Dealer, I now no longer have carplay. I do still have the usb file but worried I should not flash it since my current firmware is different.
I am on NBTevo_U right now.
Do you think I can still activate carplay with the usb file using the usb method? Do I need to edit the file to match my current firmware? Also, my carplay always had an issue where the border of the carplay not aligning correct and was not able to do full screen. Do you think we can correct this?
One more thing, I am from California in the States.
Any help is appreciated and please let me know if you need more information! Thank you!

Hi Balance. With the U firmware, the USB method of activating CarPlay won’t work.
Unfortunately, the U firmware is also one version too old for fullscreen CarPlay.
That said, CarPlay can be activated a different way and it would be possible to update your firmware to a version that supports fullscreen CarPlay.

You have NBTevo id4. We need to flash upgrade it to id6 and then u will have CarPlay
Unfortunately it will be split screen cause you have an id4 unit.
You can have also full screen but with the 07.20 firmware but it's not so stable on iD4 units.

I have a RetroFiit Apple Carplay Kit for sale, if anyone is interested.It works with lots of the NBT EVO vehicles of BMW & also the F series of MINI Cooper.
The OEM rear camera does not work and need to install a separate dedicated camera to the rear for your car.
Touchscreen on Apple Carplay will not work.
