Hrm.....I guess no one has but i'm really curious. Wife's 2020 JCW is on order and she will never have an iPhone, Android4Life. So maddening that my 4 year old Ford has AA but BMW is just now starting to offer it on select models. Hopefully there'll be a retrofit part we can buy/use....but this might be it??

I have seen on other forums that these Chinese devices are hit or miss. Integrated Auto said they should be available in the US later this year.

I, too have read, right here , in this forum, that aftermarket Chinese electronics are a crap shoot. For the prices asked, I wouldn’t take the chance. It makes more sense to consult a car audio specialist to do the work right, using tried and true parts.

"Mini won’t receive Android Auto functionality at the same time as it was just announced for BMW," according to a Mini spokesperson speaking to BMW Blog. "At this time we don’t have a confirmed timeline of when this functionality may become available on Mini models."

Yup, hence why I said I hope there's a retrofit part we can buy, because I doubt they'll ever roll it out for already delivered MINIs

You could give the Android Auto Via Mini Connected app a try, if you're comfortable loading a custom app onto your android phone:

https://github.com/hufman/AndroidAutoIdrive

The "Getting Started" guide there says what you'll need (you have to install Mini Connected Classic app on your android device, then install the .apk that he provides in the releases link onto your phone).

The only gotcha is, if you want Google Maps to work through this, you'll have to compile his Android Auto IDrive app yourself (and set it so that it adds Google Maps support). He leaves it off by default as turning it on, technically violates the google maps license agreement...

Curiously doing this only requires that your head unit has Mini Connected Apps support, which I think even the basic Visual Boost system actually supports? I might give this a try if I can find a cheap android device...

I know this is what it says, but honestly, it is still confusing me a bit.

On one's Android phone, you have to installed the old "MINI Connected Classic" app, which hasn't been updated since January 2016, and NOT the newer "MINI Connected" app, which at least was updated October 2019?

Yes, if you look down in the Requirements section, there is an explanation for why you need the MINI Connected Classic app:
Additionally, the car proposes a security challenge during the connection process, and this project asks the Security Service provided by the Connected apps for the correct response. The Connected Classic app can be installed to easily provide this response. However, the newer Connected app disabled this ability in version 5.1, which means a workaround needs to be found if the user wants the features of the newer app. For example, the user can install BMW Connected for the cloud connectivity and better robustness with the Android memory manager, and install Mini Connected Classic to provide the Security Service for this project.

So, I guess if you have an older version of the new MINI Connected app (earlier than version 5.1), then you could use that. Or, if you don't an old copy of the modern Connected app, try the Connected Classic app...

The 1.2.2 version of the AndroidAutoIdrive app no longer needs the Connected Classic app installed, if it helps! Not an exact replacement for the full Android Auto experience, however.

Does that mean it now needs the non-Classic version of the app, or does that mean it needs no app at all (other than itself)?

It now only needs the non-Classic version of the app. It runs the tunnel to talk to the car, and only one app can control the connection to the car, so it just relies on the official one.
