Bluetooth audio quirks?

Playing Pandora via bluetooth and wondering what I am doing wrong because none of these issues occurred in my '11 Clubman S ?? Playing Pandora or Amazon on my iPhone 8 and the only way to have the car establish a connection is to click on radio and play it and then return back to connect and then click on external devices. If I don't do it in this fashion then I will not be able to skip my tracks using the control button by the arm rest? I also have a JCW steering wheel and unlike my '11 Clubman S wheel I am unable to skip tracks using the wheel; only skip tracks via pushing down the central control with the scroll bar at the bottom?

Was much easier on my 'll Clubman... I prefer bluetooth audio.

Wonder if it is related to not being able to get text messages via the office option?

Sorry it this is unclear?

I also cannot get my texts to show up on the center screen?
