Change aux input to USB/Aux input

Hey guys. I was wondering if there is an easy way to tell if I can swap the aux only input on the stereo in my 2008 Cooper S for the input with Aux and USB? I've been googling and I can't find any info that helps me figure out if this is possible or not.

+1 I'm looking at a possible iPad kit but not sure if those include such an update. Any gurus that have an inside track if it's just a plug/cable swap or more's required?

MINI has a retrofit kit for USB+Bluetooth (both functions integrated in one electronics module). Parts + installation would be quite expensive.

Oi yeah, that's one's up there. I think I've seen plug-in BT mods of some sort that would be cheaper, and could do without the USB. It'd just be nice to have. So might be waiting a bit.

Yeah that seems crazy. You can get a BT-to-Aux unit for about 50 bucks. It doesn't let you skip tracks with the wheel controls but that's easy enough.

I'm interested in an alternative too. For now I bought a $25 bluetooth to aux module from best buy and it works great, but it lacks the steering wheel controls.

I found a kit on ESC Tuning, but I'm not having any luck finding a how-to.

You cant just plug it in and works. Thats for MINI that already have that socket duo for replacement, and would require some work and coding, which I have never seen done.

Just like the PDF linked above. One of the coolest and most integrated option Bluetooth w/ Music option.

http://www.motoringfile.com/wp-conte...578087307c.pdf but we found the dtat shows Production: 8/2007 - 8/2010 Gen 2 R56+ MINI.

Main install unit , using factory steering wheel controls ( if you have them ).

&

ULF Module High 84109229740

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/84109229740/ES1906933/

Convertible only requires ES1599508 & ES1305534.
IF using with iPhone 4:
Y cable ES255927.

Here is some more info a on how to do it.

I've installed over a dozen of thesein the past 5 yrears or so and cannot believe the expense. It's a labor intensive job that requires programming after the installation.

So, are you saying that if you currently have the one that just has an Aux plug you can swap it for this one?
That's the deal in my R56.

If that is the case do you know if it will actually play mp3 files from a thumb drive or pass audio through from a phone (pandora, google play, etc) or does it just charge a device?

I'm thinking an Aux plug BT module is my best bet but an extra USB to charge a device would be nice.

  1. It will play mp3 files from a thumb drive.
  2. It does not pass audio through the USB. You can use the aux input, but that is already possible without this option. It can read music files from a phone's storage if set up like a standard USB drive (however, it doesn't support MTP interface which is the default on most newer Android phones). With an iPhone and Y-cable, the headunit can read song information and send play commands, but audio still goes through the aux input. Really, this was already outdated technology when it first became available in 2008.
  3. The USB port is too low powered to charge most phones. It was designed for thumb drives.

So i just have the standard aux imput and it crackles like a mad bastard at any vol over a low wisper. I have the Nav head unit, factory blue tooth. I cant play **** through the aux without it sounding like the speakers are blown. Think its just the aux jack itself or is it something else? Cable from the aux jack back to the stereo?

Certainly the easiest thing to check is to try a new cable. That would be my first guess as to the problem.

If that's not it, spray electrical contact cleaner or 90% isoprophyl alcohol into the jack and work the plug a few times.

If that's not ti, it's very easy to pull the Aux jack from the dash and replace it with a parts yard one for next to nothing.

Regarding adding USB.

My car came with a boost radio with Aux, but not USB.

I got a Boost radio with phone and USB from a parts yard for $50. The unit worked perfectly, but after hours of homework and trying , I concluded that I could not get USB or even Aux to work in my car with this radio.

The Mini that I took the USB radio from had a very different wiring arrangement, even though the radio's connections appeared identical.

I now have Aux in. I got the identical radio to my original (no usb or phone) at a parts yard for $50 and the Aux works fine.

Currently have an aux-only module in '09 2-door, does anybody happen to have a wiring diagram for this? Can't find one anywhere. Trying to replace the module, but the wire harness that plugs into it is stuck, so I'll have to cut the wires, and want to make sure that I'm putting the right wires back in the right places.

Also, even though I only have the aux-only module, is there somewhere behind the radio that I could potentially get 5V+ power?
