Installing the door speakers in an R56 (Tons of photos)
I found plenty of great resources on this site before installing my speakers, but I wished there were more visuals. Since I'm sure I'm not the only visual-learner here, I figured I'd make a post with how I installed the door speakers today.
I didn't have any handy harnesses to use, so I ended up using a combination of the Xscorpion-HSA-6554 brackets with the stock brackets for the 5.25's. And I modeled and 3D-printed custom brackets for the tweeters to fit where the 3.5" speakers were. This method involves tearing apart the old speakers. One of my speakers blew, so I wasn't planning on ever reinstalling them.
I bought the JBL MS-52C component speakers (two 5.25" speakers with two 1" tweeters).
There are a few videos on YouTube showing how to take off the door panel, so I won't cover that.
I got this tip from basil49. Place some tape markers on the door where each plastic peg is, so you know where to push when putting it back on. A couple of the markers fell off before I took this photo.
The only fall back is that the 2 or 3 pegs near the 5.25" speaker won't press back in because of the addition of the new bracket on top of the speaker. The panel is still very snug though and no one would ever notice. It doesn't rattle at all.
I'm thinking of installing a pair of Kicker 40CS674 6-3/4" 2-way Speakers. I didn't want to install separate tweeters because that was going to complicate the process a bit more and this is the first time I'm doing this. Those pictures help a lot so just wanted to say thanks! I don't have a bracket so I'm not sure yet what I'll do to mount the new speakers to the old bracket... I guess that's something I'll have to figure out once I get to them lol.
You can mount new speakers to speaker rings made out of MDF, they're very easy to make if you are handy with a jigsaw.
Actually the speakers I bought fit perfectly (Kicker 40CS674 6-3/4" 2-way Speakers). I didn't need to do anything special, no brackets, etc. It was a pretty quick swap. I did have to screw them on top of the plastic but I was fine with that.
The audio feels completely different. I know they are not the best they can be but I'm happy now .
