First I updated the MINI Connected Software in the car by downloading from www.mini.com/connectivity.

Un-Paired the phone (Select "Forget Device" on iPhone)

Under Notifications, ensured both Messages and Mail are set to View in Lock Screen.

Paired the phone to the car again. On the iPhone opened the options for the bluetooth connection to the MINI and ensured Show Notifications was set to On. Waited a few seconds and launched Office. Now additional Office functions appear when clicking the joystick to the left.
sounds like what i had to do w/my iphone 4s too.

imo, the mini connected software seems to be the main culprit and isn't the most consistent when pairing via bluetooth. when i was testing my various phones, i had to basically forget all devices on both phones and car and then left my car for an hour and came back and could repair all of them again. however it does seem like mini is constantly developing the software which is good.

i've decided to mainly use my 4S only for media and have my note2 and blackberry z10 as my personal/work phones. i have an ipad data plan from way back that i use on the 4S to get just data on it for mini connected facebook/send to car/twitter features.

I got my iPhone 4S working with the Mini so Messages appear in the phone and office menus. I sent a test messages (SMS) but it never appeared on the Mini Screen. New Mail did not appear either. I haven't messed with it much (as it is 1:15am) so maybe it will work in regular use tomorrow. With all of your help, it is now on the menus and the car seems to think it can receive them.

I had gotten some advise on another thread and it worked for me after making sure your notifications are set on your iPhone completely turn off your phone than turn it back on. No idea why it works but it did for me and a few others.
