Built-in Dash Nav stopped working / 04 MCS

Hello everyone,

I had left my MCS sitting at an airport lot a couple of months ago, while I left the state for a trip. Upon my return, my NAV displayed some unusual issues. The unit looked like it was trying to boot up would display the Mini logo splash screen, go to the menu loader, and then the whole thing would shut itself off.

This repeated itself over and over about 30 times, until the unit decided it didn't want to function, so now the screen is black all the time. About 2 weeks after I came back, the unit would again display the same behavior, and hasn't worked since. I suspected a loose wire, but when it was checked, my mechanic informed me that everything was connected as it should be.

The car was left at a CT airport during a cold week, and worked perfectly up until I came back. Could the cold have possibly ruined the electronics? Has anyone ever experienced this? If so, what components did you have to replace?

Thanks!

You may want to take the disk out and have it cleaned or see if t possible has a crack in it

What is the condition of your battery? It's been said that when the battery is on its way out, the Nav will do funny things.

Checked the disc, no cracks, and pretty much scratch free.

Good question...but I did have the battery replaced with a brand new one about 18 months ago, probably closer to 2 years ago now.
Haven't had it checked recently though.

Do you think it's possible that the logic board behind the LCD screen suffered damage from the 5 days of near constant cold? I hope I can avoid having that unit replaced, it's easily $2k.

Battery - check. (@ 2 years it should be fine)
Disc - check.

Hmmm. Sounds more like an issue with the Nav unit under the seat than the screen itself - otherwise you'd hear it spin up, etc. Can't think of a way to troubleshoot it without plugging in a known good unit. I believe I've seen threads here talking about replacing the DVD head reader...

Same thing with me. The screen lights up, but no functions show up. You simply see the back light. Hmm

Well, I scheduled a service visit at the nearest Mini dealership this Saturday. They'll look into this, and a SES light as well. I'm hopeful it's just the DVD player itself, it would be so much cheap to replace that! lol

I will say that at one point when I looked under the seat at the DVD drive, the red light was flashing. And another time it was solid.

I take that back...it's well over $3k for the DVD Player/Computer.
I really don't wanna say it, but that's a completely BS price. If I needed to replace the display and the computer, that's nearly $5k.

I mean...good god.

That may be new prices, but you can easily get it for less at a wrecker's. Try

I'd guess a low battery voltage issue

Revisiting this one:

Visited Mini of Warwick, and they diagnosed it as a busted NAV computer. Over $3k to repair and replace. HAHA!! NOT HAPPENING! lol

Going to go with an instrument cluster to replace the entire center unit instead.
