Crossover with no amp? HELP!!!
HELP! I have a 2002 Mini S and I have the NON HK system. I recently replaced my rear speakers with Polk 6x9s and I have yet to install my new Polk DB1001 tweeters and Polk DB521s for the front. The tweeters came with a set of crossovers. My question is, if I'm just replacing the stock tweeters with the new tweeters, do I need to add in the crossovers? I don't have an AMP and I have the OEM deck too.
HELP PLEASE!!

Whenever I use speakers that come with a crossover, I use the crossover. Whether or not an amplifier is used is irrelevant. The crossover is usually tuned to the speaker's specs so that the correct frequencies are playing through it. Without the crossover in place you'll be forcing the speaker to produce frequencies that it may not have been designed to make.
Use the Polk Crossover
I just put Polk DB6501's in my '02 MCS a couple weeks ago. Use the crossover or you will destroy the new Polk tweeter. You will find that when you pull the stock tweeter that there is a resistor on it. A cheap way to clip the low response from the tweeter. If you install the new tweeter without the crossover there is nothing to keep the full signal from going to the tweeter. The Polk crossover fits nicely right next to the speaker on the bottom part of the door and the door panel clears it with no modifications. The Polk tweeter will mount in the stock location behind the stock tweeter grill using the smaller of the two supplied Polk tweeter mounts with only minor modifications. This will allow you to adjust the direction the tweeter points. Good Luck. I can supply some pictures if you need them.

Polk DB6501 Install Pictures
First, use the smaller of the two tweeter cups supplied. You will have to file the edge of the Polk tweeter cup in one spot to get it to sit flat in the stock mount. Next bend the back brackets almost flat, then bend them so they will go around the back of the stock MINI mount.

Screw the cup onto the stock MINI mount, run the wires throught the back of the cup, then the tweeter will snap in.

Then remount droor latch / tweeter assembly to your door and wire it up.

The Bass unit mounts up so it clears the window and the stock speaker grill if you use the Polk supplied adapter ring. The crossover can be mounted as shown and it will clear the door panel.

Reinstall your door panel and your done.

Finished with stock speaker grills is place - Still has Stock OEM look.

Some people say installing good speakers using the stock HU is a waste of time but I disagree. These Polks along with a set of JVC 6x9's in the back and Dynamat in the doors and rear quarters have made a huge improvement in my sound quality and my stock speakers were not blown or crackling. I now have rich bass, and distinct highs. Nothing you will win an audio contest with but for a total cost outlay of ~$250 I think it was a great bang for the buck!
