IPhone 4 Question

I heard from my MA that there is no adapter for the IPhone 4 for the Mini 2010 (or perhaps any other year). True?

I also heard that the new IPhone 4 needs "15 volts" instead of "12 volts"...I'm probably getting this last part wrong, but at the very least the power wasn't compatible between the Mini adapter and the IPhone 4.

Anyone know antyhing about this and / or are the plans anyone is aware of to support the IPhone 4?

Thanks,
Perry

I'm not 100% sure, but if you are referring to the USB/aux adapter than don't count on it working. It does not work with the 3GS to charge, and I am pretty sure the iPhone 4 has the same pin outs for the adapter. If MINI hasn't developed a new adapter yet for the 3GS, I wouldn't count on anything new for the 4, although maybe they won't want to be another generation behind in their support. No idea on the snap in armrest adapters as I didn't want the armrest in my car. It does of course support iPod functionality and bluetooth so my 3GS is at least mostly integrated and I could get a separate charging solution if I really needed/wanted, which I don't.

I fully expect to see someone (like Griffin, for example) offering an adapter very soon. Also, BMW will likely sell a new cable at some point, too.

iPhone 4 should have the same connector as the 3GS. I know that BMW has an updated cable that some people have working.

And the voltage they changed to is 5V. The standard USB supplied voltage. The older iPhone and iPods worked with 12V because of the original FireWire specifications of iPods.

Scoshe has an adapter that converts the 12V to 5V to use with newer iPhones/iPods.

I know the y cable that came in my 09 MCS will not charge the iphone 3GS or the Iphone 4 i tried it out yesterday with no success. So i just stuck the iphone car charger in the mini and will use that, kind of a pain but what else can I do.

Dumb question - if you see the battery charging symbol, does that always mean it's charging? I don't know which version cable I have (It came with MINI delivered last month.) I connected my iPhone 4 yesterday and I do see the charge symbol and everything else works fine. I do receive a message when I first connect that "This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone" but I can dismiss and continue using the iPhone. I alos get that message with my iTrip and a couple of other connections.

As a side note, Bluetooth improved dramatically with the iPhone, as compared to the Palm Treo 700 p and Motorola Razor phones that I had been using . . .

Charging means it has power... is that enough power to overcome what it is using is the question...

A new sleeve that goes into the arm rest will be available in the next 6 months. Just have to wait.

while we're on the subject, has anyone had any trouble getting the new iPhone 4 to pair with your MINI?

Is this legit information? I had been using the arm rest charger on my 3GS its very convenient, that was the one thing holding me back from the iPhone 4 but i went ahead and go it anyway.

Unfortunately I am without my car as its being repaired so I can't tell if it will fit or not but I highly doubt it will work with the 3GS cradle/sleeve that goes in the arm rest.

My iPhone 4 paired up with no problem, and it charges with the Y-cable. My 3GS would charge MOST of the time. If I connected it before starting the car, sometimes it wouldn't charge. Usually (but not 100% of the time) if the car was already running when connected, it would charge. I just tested the 4 (with car started) and it charged and operated properly. I started with 49% battery charge. There has been some word that a very low battery won't charge, while a more full battery will. I'll try to test that theory with the 4.

Me too.... it took a bit to pair but it eventually did. Not sure how slow/fast it's charging but I do know it's charging...

My ipod works with my radio... I just can't use my sirius app through the radio.

Has anyone tried a different 3ed party cable? Here is one (2nd cable down called ProCable Series and the 1st choice, Apple 30 pin to USB & 3.5mm stereo) and would it work?

if your looking into the ProCable Series and want to save a few bucks + free shipping. This is the same exact product for the fraction of the price.

The MINI uses the older serial iPod protocol for handling the song data and steering wheel controls- part of the reason the MINI Y-cable is so expensive is that it includes a USB to Serial converter.

Unless it was specifically designed for a MINI, I imagine the cable wouldn't include it which would cause problems. You can work around some of them by storing non-DRM'd audio files on the iPod in what some people call 'storage mode' (essentially using it like an expensive thumb drive) but then the iPod/iPhone doesn't have access to the music for playback outside of the car.

Lots more detail in this thread:

I have a 2009 MCS and recently tried using my new iphone 4 by connecting it to the adaptor but for some reason I can't get the songs to play. I can see all my songs/playlist on the screen but I the steering wheel buttons don't work and neither does manually trying to control it from the radio buttons. Is there a fix for this either from the dealership or third party vendor of a different cable or something?

It doesn't sound like things are working correctly- if song data is showing up on the car, the physical connection of the USB cable should be okay.

I'd try hard resetting the phone and reconnecting it to the dock connector- also make sure the 3.5mm audio jack is plugged all the way in. I've accidentally pulled it halfway out and lost audio before.

If that doesn't work have you used other iPod / iPhones in the car before?

I used to be able to use my iphone 3g with the stock cable and adaptor my 2009 MCS came with, it worked fine. I was able to control the functions through my sterring wheel and manually through radio buttons. But now it does not work with iphone 4

When you say the Stock Cable are you talking about the MINI "Y Cable" with USB and AUX or the cable that came with the iPhone with just a USB connection.

If it is the cable that came with the iPhone then you will need to set you new iPhone to Mass Storage Mode and it should then work as your old one did.

If you mean the MINI "Y Cable" then it should work straight away. Other seem to have not problem with it this way

I'm using the MINI Y Cable with the new iphone 4. It's weird, I can see the songs/playlist but I can't get the music to play with either steering wheel buttons or radio buttons. The Y Cable worked with my 3G iphone but now with that iphone 4. Any suggestions?

I think half the problem is iOS 4. The iPhone 3GS charged fine, played music properly, everything that should have functioned via the OEM Y-Cable, did.

Up until iOS 4.0 that is. Once upgrading the 3GS to 4.0 software, it killed all control through the cable. Music does play, but it's had multiple problems with music cutting out/stopping altogether.

It's hard to be sure what a fix might be. Is it hardware related really, or software as suspected? Anybody else have some thoughts or insight? It would be great to have the phone charged on 8 hour drive... and not be dead in the water like it's gone hiking all day.

I haven't done extensive testing under different conditions (battery level, etc), but it seems that my iPhone 4 DOES charge in my 2008 Clubman S, while my 3GS did not charge. The iPod connection in the audio system works fine, just as before. So, I'm happy.

Hi, we are looking at buying a Mini and trying to make some sense of the situation with the iPhone 4. Since we haven't bought the car yet, which options make the most sense to get?

1) We want to charge iPhone and control playback from steering wheel
2) Bluetooth calling functionality

We are happy to ditch 2, if we can get 1 inexpensively....

Thanks!
