Navigation & Audio iPod-USB data storage
iPod-USB data storage
Greetings from British Columbia, Canada
Just picked up my MCS last week and while I'm loving it I am overwhelmed with all the customized settings one can make.
Today I picked up my VERY expensive y-connector so I can use my IPOD through the radio head using the AUX and USB connection. Works great and the radio head is showing all the details of my playlists, etc.
My question:
The small bluetooth/nav/radio/usb booklet that came with the MCS talks about being able to upload up to 20,000 songs to what I would believe to be the cars internal hard/flash drive.
Is this true and what are the steps to accomplish this.
Thanks

He lives in Canada. It is a built for Canada MCS. There are differences. We don't get the Y cable for free to my knowledge, but Bi-Xenon headlights are standard on our MCS, as well as white side markers/turn signals. Lots of differences.
Same here...if your car had the USB and AUX ports under the stack, the cable should have come with it. Mine was actually missing on delivery so they went and took one from a car in the showroom.
edit: ok so how much is the cable in Canada?? If it's under $500 that seems like a fair trade for Xenons...

i don't think it actually uploads the songs, but rather the song info. otherwise you would be able to disconnect your ipod/usb once the upload is complete and still play the songs. not sure if that was the purpose.
There is NO hard drive or flash drive in the car for uploading to. There is how ever volatile memory that stores data about the songs on a USB Thumb Drive. It stores the song Title, Artist, Location, Genre, etc that it takes from the MP3 Tags in MP3's. The memory will hold approximately 20,000 data units (MP3 tags) before dumping it on a first come first served basis. In other words if you MP3's have Title, Artist, Genre, Time, Location, Composer etc filled out. Lets say 10 tags for each MP3 the car will hold data about approximatley 2000 songs indexed - 10 tags X 2000 = 20,000. But if you reduse the number of tags that have info in them to 5 you can get about 4000 Songs indexed - 5 tags x 4000 = 20,000.
This information is really only an index that the car can use to allow you to select songs by artist, gerne, title etc. It is not actually uploading the songs to the car. Also every time the car is shut off the Indexing is lost and will be redone wehn teh cars starts or a new USB drive is inserted to the USB port.
If you need more info than this let me know and i will point you towards a few other threads that expaoin it in much more detail.

Hahaha. My dealer sells the cable for $60 bucks. I think some "stealerships" sell it for as much as $80.
Thanks
You guys are great.and quick. The mystery is resolved thanks to Schatzy. For those of you interested, my Mini dealer charged me $100 for the Y-cable after a 'generous' 10% discount.
But remember this is Canada, ehh, where car dealers and electronics retailers in particular have a license to steal. I'll take comfort in my bi-xeonon headlamps and the fact that the ipod sounds great. Cheers!

I'm ready to chuck the "Y" cable .
I've been trying to figure out the radio controls for the ipod and it just seems to complicated plus I'm not real happy with the whole radio etc interface.
Has anybody figured out how to listen to podcasts?
I'm going to just plug it into the audio and control the ipod manually.
