Bluetooth through speakers

I have a Garmin 760, it is paired to my new phone and worksd great. I read someplace that if plugged into the AUX port you can play the radio and it will mute for the Nav voice or an incoming call. How do you make that work?

If you use the MP3 player in the 760, when bluetooth pops up, it will override the MP3.

The only way the car will mute music is if it has the OEM Nav system.

There is an aftermarket harness that can inject audio from a GPS but it's expensive.

I don't have the NAV system, but do have the convenience package with bluetooth -- so I pair my phone with the car (and not my nuvi 660). Makes it easy to pick up calls -- but with the speaker swap, the phone comes through the rear speakers!

One of the nice things about the convenience/bluetooth package is that if I'm playing music from my iPod (which I usually am), it pauses the iPod before switching to bluetooth, then picks up where it left off at the end of the call.

Not totaly true. It will mute the music (radio, USB, iPod, CD etc) if you have the Bluetooth installed as OEM inthe car. You can purchase the NAV or Non Nave systems with out bluetooth and the it would not mute the music.

Actaully if the GPS has an audio output on it then it can be connected to the AUX IN and then played thru the audio system in the car.

The only problemn the OP will have is that the Bluetooth in the GPS will mute the MP3 player in the GPS and ply the phone thru the car audio only if he/she has the AUX IN selected. It they have the radio or CD selected then the music will not be muted.

The OP asked if he played the radio would the car mute it to play the bluetooth from the Nuvi w/phone paired to it. That's what I was referring to. If the car has a phone paired to it, then it will mute the radio when a call comes in. But you won't hear the radio if you use the AUX input to get nav/phone from a Nuvi.

Jim,

The radio or CD will not mute just because you have a signal going into the AUX IN. The only way in your set up to get the bluetooth phone to play thru the stereo is to have it plugged ino the AUX IN and then Select the AUX IN as the source and what ever is coming out of the GPS is what will be heard. I.E. if the PGS is playing music thru its MP3 player then if a phone call comes in it will mute the MP3 and send phone thru the AUX IN. But remember if you have the radio or CD seelcted then the sound fromthe GPS is not going to play.

In the brochure it said that the 2008 came with a "CD Boost" as standard. It said that this included "blue tooth prep". I did not know what all that meant, but I did read a post (someplace) where they had the OEM Garmin added and it would mute and play through the speakers. Perhaps this person had some other option that allowed this to happen (I'm not sure). Before I take the car apart to hook up the power source I wanted to know if that was really all it would be.

My Garmin 755T has an FM transmitter which plays through the car stereo via an unused FM channel. It is not possible to listen to another FM broadcast while routing the GPS through the stereo, so there is no muting function involved. Changing between the GPS channel and other memorized FM channels is easy, however, using the memory buttons. The Garmin will also ply through its won internal speaker, but when playing through the stereo speakers the GPS directions are far more clearly audible over ambient noise in the cabin (and the volume can be cranked up much higher). I like to use the steroe speaker option during occasions when it's important not to miss any GPS directions.

Prep is different from having the bluetooth installed. It just means that if you have the bluetooth installed then it will show the phone data on the screen and also rout the calls thru the stereo.

I do not remember hearing anything like this.

There are some aftermarket bluetooth modules that can be installed (newministuff.com) and if they had one of those it might do the job. but that would do away with the bluetooth need in the GPS.

Good luck with your PGS and the mod.

BTW do you have any of the following as options on your car.

1. Convienence package
2.Bluetooth/iPod integration
3. Comfort Bluetooth/iPod integration. (USB port under center stack)

Thanks for the break down. I do not have any of the options you mentioned. I wish I had known about this site and looked around here BEFORE I built and ordered my Mini. I might have made some other choices on options. At any rate I am still very happy with my car and will find a work around for what I missed.

Jim,
check out www.newministuff.com

They may have something that can help you out. It may not be the exact way you wanted to go but it may be better than what you have now.

Hi & thanks for the recommendation
Yes we have an adaptor that will plug into a portable nav & auto mute the stereo & play the sound whenever the nav speaks
I don't really recommend it for phone use as if there are quiet periods in the conversation the interface will switch back to your stereo & bac to phone call when there is sound

Mike, you do have what I need and I was just looking around for a short term option until I can get one of your systems. It is first on my list for a spring project as there was snow on the ground here this morning and I don't have a warm place to work.
