push button on nav system skips some selections

i have a 2004 mcs with nav system and for some reason when i turn the **** to select a feature it will alway skip a selection.. on some menus i cant even slect some things because there is an even amount of selections in that menu.. if there are an odd amount then i have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the menu then go back up to the odd numbered selection..
its a bit difficult to explain but i cant tell i its a firmware problem or if its the actual **** thats messing up..
i dont know the firmware version or anything but i can find out if anyone is willing to tell me how..

thanks for the help

In 'settings', the FW version will show up in the upper right hand corner.
i.e. SW 4-1/80 (which is V29, IIRC)

Doesn't sound like a mechanical malfunction, but I can't really envision the issue you're describing.

My guess is that it is a mechanical problem with the rotary switch at the ****.

I don't think a firmware update would fix it, but wouldn't hurt to try. Here is an overview of the procedure: http://mini.mdsbrain.com/?p=183. Look here for version V31 of the firmware: http://www.x5world.com/navigation-sy...available.html. V32 is actually the newest but does not include updates for USA units.

Are you sure you want to discuss how stiff our ***** feel?

My **** turns easily, with each click causing one "action" on the screen. Are you saying that one click on yours performs what should be two clicks? For example in map view does the magnification jump an extra step? The rotary switch could be generating a noisy pulse that the electronics interprets as two pulses. I know just enough to be dangerous and it would be better if an EE chimes in with a recommendation.

By EE I meant electrical engineer. Dirty contacts inside the switch could cause a problem, but I would have expected dirty contacts to cause erratic behavior, not consistently one extra jump every time.

You could try replacing the part that has the switch, although there is no guarantee it will be a fix. However it is probably what a dealer would try first anyway. The part number is 65906917267 (#3 in this diagram): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...67&hg=65&fg=50. Check with Classic MINI for a price.
