Yep. I just figured that out too. My plans were to use my Garmin as an MP3 player after I get it mounted with a Kuda mount. Several drawbacks were discovered. the sound quality is okay, but not great. Storage is limited to 4 GB on a Nuvi 780 and only 2 GB on a unit below that. You cannot use the stering wheel controls. So i popped out my SD cad and put into a USB reader and I can play it through the USB on the car. Now i just need to find time to copy and organized all my CDs

My plans are to use the USB during normal use and if I need to hear directions from the Garmin, I'll use the aux port with the SD card in the Garmin.

I posted over in the 1st generation without realizing it but want to confirm that you can load as many files as you want on a USB stick (32gb) without having any problems reading (other than time).

On a USB drive you can load lots and lots of files but there will be a problem if you get over a bout 4000-5000 songs loaded.

See this thread for much more of an explanation. Make sure you read all the posts. Especially posts # 60, 62, 65, 67, 71, 75, 81, 84. With great emphisis on Post #67 as it explains how the USB system in the car works.
These will explain the way the system works. if you still have questions please feel free to ask after reading this thread.

schatzy,

Great thread. Thanks for the info. I'll just have to see how it turns out when it gets here. Looks like I'll have to delete some of the tags to get all the music to play though. I'll have to start figuring out how to do that.

The problem with deleting tags is that then other programs such as iTunes, Windows Media Player, and ohters then have trouble sorting the music. Also if you delete to amny tags then it wil aslo not wokr in the MINI.

The minimum tags required by iTune and Windows Media Player is

Track name
artist name
album name
track number

if these are not present then the music is just a scramble. And with just those four tags you are limited to 5000 songs.

My problem is that my collection is 59,000+ songs. Yes Fifty Nine Thousand plus songs from over 7800 albums and 5400 artists. It takes up over 300 gig of a 500 gig hard drive.

I still like the idea of deleteing extraneous tag info, lots of tools will do that very easily. Keep these files seperate from your real collection (store them on the flash drive) and you're good to go.

I appreciate owning a lot of music, but seriously, do you need anywhere near that much music at any given moment? A handful of thumb drives would cover most of it.

When i am on the road there are many things that might get me thinking of a particular song and then i want to listen to it. Unfortunately my iPod only holds about 1/10 of my collection so i end up not being able to hear songs when i want to. But i am still working on a solution.
