MINI Bluetooth & iPhone

Hi everyone

I'm waiting for my Cooper to arrive in the next few weeks and I have ordered bluetooth (which comes with MFSW & armrest).

I currently have a Motorola KRZR K1 but I'm thinking of getting the new iPhone when it comes out (the 3G one). I emailed MINI customer service and they sent back the bluetooth compatibility list that was updated recently and the iPhone is on it. Software version 1.1.2 has been tested and it has been "tested & approved" which I think means everything works on it.

My question is: does this do everything then? Like will phonebook n all that appear on the MINI digital display? Also, I have an iPod but only after reading other posts in this forum I thought that maybe I could put all my music onto the iPhone and could I then just get the music off that rather than bringing along the iPod too? If I could it'd be great coz my iPod is only 4GB and I'm running outta space on it!

Thanks all, appreciate the help!

I've just done a bunch of reading on the subject as I am about to order my mini. You can use the iPhone as both a phone and an iPod, but in order to use the iPod part, it must be physically plugged into the iPod adapter which is located under the stereo near the cup-holders. The phone part works wirelessly through bluetooth.

I ordered my R56 with the same idea, thinking that the 3G iPhone will also have GPS giving me a great automotive telematic platform with entertainment, internet access, gps, mapping, email, voice communication and text messaging. Your mini should arrive with the required cable in the glovebox, though the cable is not very long. Next we need a nice, clean effective mounting option!

Actually, it seems like the cable isn't coming as standard on all cars. Some users over in the Nav/Audio group have reported that they didn't get one and the dealership is making them pay extra. Talk to your MA before the car arrives and make them aware that you expect this to be included so there are no surprises on delivery day..

Just picked up my mini and paired my iphone (firmware v1.1.2) and it works flawlessly. Full phone book features and music features. Zero complaints. Hoping that 3g version is the same.

I wouldn't make any decisions regarding this phone until next week. Apple has made no announcements stating any of the specs on the Gen 2 iPhone, nor have they even confirmed that they are releasing a Gen 2 iPhone (even though everyone and their mother is 100% positive that they are). What that means to you, is that there is no way of knowing if this new phone will be a 3g phone, or if it will support the bluetooth unit that's in the MINI until the specs are released next week.

Also, as a point of interest, current firmware on the iPhone is v 1.14. I imagine that it does work with MINIs bluetooth, but 1.12 is six months old and if you were to skip the gen 2 iPhone and get a gen 1 (if you could find one, from what I've been reading, they've sold out completely), your gen 1 phone would have firmware v1.14 on it.

The glove box ipod adapter is not standard. You have to order that separately as an add-on.

Good system

I don't have an iPhone, but the display shows my phonebook. It doesn't download it into the car like other systems I've seen, but that's OK. I think the system works quite well. The only issue I have is dialing a number using the keypad, sometimes it is hard to line up which button dials the number.

My dealer tried to withhold the iPod USB cable until I asked where it was. One MA said I had to buy it. I complained to my MA asking why would I pay $1500 for a package that comes incomplete? He said they took them out "for safe keeping". The other dealership in town says they come with the car. Hmm...

My dealer (Mini of South Atlanta) included it with the car.

June 9th is their developer conference, and supposedly the new phones will be released that day. If that's the case the 2.0 firmware for the old phones should be out too and others here can be guinea pigs for you pretty soon after that.

Sadly, no it does not necessarily mean that you have bluetooth. I have the bluetooth buttons on my steering wheel too, but my MC does not have bluetooth capability on board.

Apparently those buttons come free, as an added bonus feature on the multi-function steering wheel and are there to make you look cool.

Can someone confirm that if you have the iPhone connected with the fancy connector that comes with the kit, and playing in iPod mode as an "accessory", can you still initiate/receive calls from the BT interface?

Yes. The iPhone will cut out the iPod function and allow you to receive the calls. My iPhone also loads the entire phone book which can be accessed via the NAV if you have it.
