Anyone know of a way (by altering the amp or whatever) to get the rear speakers in the HK system to do more than just the bass. The reason the system distorts is because the 6 inchers in the front are handling an awful lot.

You may want to try adding an amp for the rears, but the HK speakers in the rear never get out much more than just "BASS" anyways. I opted for a JL audio stealthbox sub to take care of the BASS I needed and had separate amps to run the sub and the HK speakers. Sorry, I know the rears suck unless you have a separate power source to work them.

When the MINI HK mode is on, all the rear speakers will play is bass, much like a pseudo subwoofer. Try changing the mode to festival, electronic, spatialization to see if it better suits your tastes.

Ive done all that already, played with every single setting. The simple fact is that the way the amp manages things is horrible. It i s either too much treble, too much bass or distorts and there is nothing the settings can do...no matter how much you tweak them.

There are a ton of ideas in the Audio threads. I am going to try something. Keep the stock head unit, install a five channel amp, stock speakers and a JL stealth box off the fifth channel.

How do you change the mode? I've tried the system out at the dealers and can't get to anything but MINI H/K and driver? Which buttons do I push? Hopefully it comes with a good manual?

I'm planning on getting "Bass Blockers" for the front speakers of my HK system. I agree those lower front two speakers are pushed way to hard. Almost like too much Wattage is pumped to them that should have been used to drive the rear dual-voice coil speakers.

Here's a thread I started (Mar 6, 2003) after owning the car only a week!

Front vs. Rear "loudness"

I hope MINI is listening and will change the programming on the DSC/AMP to adjust this.

*edit*

I found this thread too:
Too much bass for the fronts to handle

OlyMini, when the display says "MINI H/K", instead of pushing the "note" button, use the
volumn control to scroll thru options.

I only listen to NPR for radio. All other mainstream radio (not that I care for that music anyway) just sounds AWFUL. Too much bass.

However, my CDs come out very crisp and clear with very balanced sound. Initially, I turned the fader back to promote the sound of the rears more but after a while I went back to the front because I like the stock setup. It works really, really well for jazz.

I opted for my own sound settings rather than using a preconfigured one. My bass is turned down really low. Not to nothing but low but there's still plenty. I agree that this shouldn't be the correct way to do this. My treble is at the max. The system is heavily weighted to bass unfortunately.
