Question about the Nuvi 680

I just bought the Nuvi 680 and the sales rep also talked me into purchasing the cd maps 2008. Now I am wondering if I really need it. How current are the maps on the Nuvi 680?

So far I think it's a really cool toy!!

Can't you update the maps via the website for free?

I have had a 660 for my wife for just over a year, and I just bought another for my own car, great tools indeed!

Garmin's map updates almost always cost $. Might be discounted, but still not free. The newest version of the software would have the latest POI info and map data (new streets). Garmin's website says this.

In today's fast-paced world, streets and points of interest are constantly changing. Don't get caught without the latest map data on your unit. Our Map Update 2008 City Navigator North America NT features the most up-to-date, detailed map data around. With premium-quality map data provided by NAVTEQ, you'll navigate with confidence.
Features:
  • more than 6 million miles of road coverage
  • 47 updated cities
  • new street developments
  • over 6 million updated points of interest, including gas stations, parking garages, restaurants, hotels and ATM locations
  • postal code support for Canada

The current NUVI maps for the US are City Navigator NT 2008. Do you have that on the NUVI? If you do, I would return the DVD to the store and ask for a refund. Stores should not be selling brand new NUVIs with old maps, that's a nasty trick.

That said, Garmin does sell the updates... they run about $60. And on www.garmin.com is a spot where you can report incorrect data, which goes a long way towards improving the POI database.

All Nuvi models sold after May 1st, 2007 should already have the 2008 maps. In fact, the 2009 map update is due out late next month.

I'd take the map disc back to the store for a refund.

To check which version you have loaded, tap on the wrench icon from the main menu, then tap "System", and then "About". If your currently-loaded map version shows up as "City Navigator North America NT 2008", then you already have the latest version.

Well, I figured the actual steps to display the map information would vary from model to model in the Nuvi line, but hopefully the OP will be able to figure it out, since I'm sure a just-purchased 680 would have the 2008 maps already.
