6x9 Speaker Preferences?

I need 6x9 speaker recommendations.

I've pulled the rear seats out of my MCS and plan on making the back just a cargo area. That might mean closing it off from the front, muffling the 6x9 speakers. I have the HIFI upgrade.

So, I'm thinking of building a cabinet that would form a barrier between cargo and occupants. This cabinet could be part speaker cabinet for 6x9 replacements.

I'm not really confined to 6x9, if there is something better. However, I don't really want to get into adding amps. Nor do I want a big sub.

I've seen some recommendations for Infinity Kappa and the 693.7i look interesting. I've also heard recommendations for Focals. I don't really know what to get. So, I'd like to hear people's suggestions with why they are great.

My music interests are somewhat eclectic and vary from acid rock, to Irish/British traditional and folk-rock, to classical, operatic, and JPop (Japanese Pop). Don't care for rap.

Can't help afa the 6x9s, and I have the base stereo, but put Focals in the fronts without an amp and the clarity is stunning. We seem to listen to similar music and to be honest, I've been listening to mostly classical since I did the speaker upgrade for all the sound detail that's now available. Folk rock and you can hear the breaths and fingering on the guitars that wasn't available before the upgrade.

Both of my purchases were ebay. One set was the access and the other was polyglass cv1. ebay made the focals much closer in price to the Infinitys. Retail Focals are harsh $.

Sounds like you have a project going. How much time to dismantle the back if I may ask?

Mark

The hard part was figuring out how the seat mechanisms work. I got the seat bottom out, but was stuck with the last part of freeing the seatbacks. Adam at Alta helped me out here.

If I knew then, what I know now, it would take about ten minutes to remove the seats. That's as far as I am now. Just looking to see what is feasible, and how best to design what to add.

are you looking for a full range speaker or just using the spot for bass? I've got a pair of Elemental Designs EU-700's and an old school pair of Kicker F169a's (free air 6.9 subwoofers). I'm still on the fence about what to use.

I get zero when I search for "Focals 6x9" or "Focals speakers" on ebay.

I don't have ebay access right now, but there were well over 40 sales of focals when I was there 2 wks ago. I believe it's been discussed that these are grey market.

Duh, I was searching on "Focals" when I should have been searching on "Focal".

Is the OEM HIFI amp enough to drive the 690 CVI? The Focal is 4 ohm, 94 db, Nominal power 80 watts. The Kappa is 2 ohm, 95 db sensitivity, and claims a power range of 2-110 watts RMS.

The Focal seems to have a built-in crossover. In the Replacement how to thread it says that the 6x9s have a separate tweeter with separate wires. So, how would you wire the 690 CVI to get the full range?

Anyone done a side-by-side comparison between the Focal 690 CVI and the Infinity Kappa 693.7i?

Thanks,

The Kappa comes with two "inline crossovers". I wonder

Again, no help with the 6x9s, but my 165v1s (6.5") came with their own crossover, but I only had 1 set of leads to the speakers(stock). The actual 2-way focal speaker had 2 sets of leads; bass and treble. So I'm thinking that you could just switch out the connectors, use the wiring diagrams posted, and be good to go.

I think motormouth said his front focals did well with the stock amp and great with his upgraded BA GT-40.

Sorry, just took a while to figure out that you do have a built in crossover with the 690. Too bad. Sorry for the wrong info.

What Focal model did you put in the front? Did it just drop in with no modifications? To me it makes sense to start with the fronts because you hear them more. The 6x9s are in the back more for bass and soundstage imo.

I replaced the factory speakers in my other car with Focals. I highly recommend them. BTW, go to the Focal link and click on "IMPORTANT NOTICE" to see more about what PGT referred to in his comment about online resellers. http://www.focal-america.com/

You can also find local distributors from this website.

Hmm, there is a dealer in Salinas. I guess I should go listen. Still not sure how I would overcome the built-in crossover.

I guess no one has done a direct comparison with the Infinity Kappas...
