If you look earlier in this thread you will find claims that it makes a difference to callers. I don't know personally, I didn't do a comparison. I just moved it. It wasn't a bid deal.

Anyone else have this trouble? It was definitely flush when I took it apart. No tabs are broken and it is aligned properly. The metal clip that grabs it has the same gap as the 3 others that hold. I can get the front edge flush but that corner pops loose once I push the rear edge up into the clips. With the whole thing out of the ceiling it snaps on just like it should. Obviously something is not right...
I just moved my mic. The problem you may be having is that when you removed the 2 torx screws and droped the panel there is a ring above the headliner that it snaps back into. you may have to set that in the right position to close the gap. that's what I did and just fiddled with it.

That might have been the case. The ring was in the right place as far as I could tell. It looked like the ring on top was lower than before, since it was holding the cover off on the one corner. I finally found out what was holding the corner out. It was the stand-off that goes inside the slot where the torx screws are. The ring appeared to be in the right place and after a few hours of trying different things and positions of that ring, I shortened the standoffs.

So I took my R56 in for service and just asked them to switch the microphone position saying, "Apparently it's a known problem and I think there's some service bulletin out on it". They did it for free with no questions.

You know what, the quality is actually much better. I made some calls on the way home and for the first time people didn't say, "What? What? I can't hear you! It sounds like you're breaking up!"

I'm really pleased.

Clubman Bluetooth Microphone

Thank you so much, CoffeeMan. I had no idea my microphone was first, on the right side, and second could be moved to the left! I moved it myself tonight and can't wait until morning to tell my Scottish husband!!! He will get a good laugh with that one or make a colorful British comment anyway

Thanks for this tip Coffeeman and everyone else who contributed here. I was disappointed, but prepared to just live with the crappy voice quality from my MINI's hands free system until I read this. I moved the microphone today as per instructions in this thread, and things are much better now.

To add to the topic, my last car had a microphone gain setting in the diagnostic side of the navigation. Not sure if this exists somewhere herein, be it in the nav, the info system or through something like NCS expert. Anyone have any ideas there? I'm in a convertible so the location is what it its. crappy at that - next to the tach.

As a complete side note to help improve call quality reduce your heater/ac blower speed and close windows and sunroof.
