Stock Boost Head Unit w/upgraded speakers?

Has anyone only upgraded their speakers with the stock head unit and had good results? This is my second Cooper S and I can't stand the stock system. My first S had Harmon Kardon and that was much better.

Also, I know about the DPSM, but that is currently way out of my budget.

Thanks!

I have heard a system or two that have upgraded speakers and kept the basic stock and it is not too bad. Definetly worth doing in my opinion.

Someone has to have some more input on this. What speakers work/fit best, etc..

You are welcome....

FYI, you need to listen to speaker for yourself to figure out which ones sound best to you. Everyone has different ears.....

Crutchfield is a good start for finding fits and a local audio shop should be able to let you hear them.

The stock headunit is very low powered, and this is balanced by stock speakers that are very efficient. For direct replacement aftermarket speakers, you'll be restricted to those with highest efficiency. If installing an external amp is a possibility, you would get better sound and a wider selection of high quality speakers.

I just put in JBL three ways 6.5"s up front and 6x9"s in the rear. I kept my stock head unit and everything works great I love it. Plus I get to keep my steering wheel controls. My speakers are the GTO series and they are all three ways, fronts are 60w RMS and rears are 100w RMS, with peak wattage of around 900w!!!. Now I am getting ready to add a set of ten inch audiobahns to finish off the sound. My speakers already provide enough bass I just like that little extra punch.

Hello everyone. i've searched the forums for answers about upgrading the stock boost audio to the HK setup. i can't seem to find a straight forward answer on what parts i need. I have a 2005 MCS with boost mp3 cd headunit and would like to get all the parts needed to updgrade to the HK (after market is not an option). I know the headunits look exactly the same but are they infact exactly the same? from reading other posts i know i need the 2 HK front speakers with tweeters, the HK 2 rear speakers and the HK amplifier. Are the wiring harness the same as the stock or do i need a new wiring harness for the HK or can i modify the stock wiring. if someone can list all the parts(part#s) to upgrade from stock to HK i'd appreciate it. If someone upgraded their audio system from HK to aftermarket and have the parts let me know. Thank you very much.

You need a new harness as well. It's been done before, but the guy who did it said it was a whole lotta work.

edit: Here is the link to the thread.

You should seriously consider the DPSM instead, for two big reasons:
  1. It is far superior to the H/K
  2. It is much easier to upgrade to from the Boost system (since it is designed to be converted from the Boost)
The only downside is that it isn't cheap... but when you take the labor costs (or time if you're doing it yourself), it's a no brainer. I'm currently spending way too much money trying to convert from the H/K to the DPSM - see my thread on it - because it really is much better than the H/K (IMO).

Converting to or away from the H/K (for the Boost or DPSM) is no easy feat, because the wiring harnesses are completely different for the H/K.

Thanks guys. looks like the job is pretty straight forward when used with the chassis and door harnesses from mini.
