Gas Mileage and MTH files

[size=3]I've posed this question to Volker but now I would like to know what actual users have noticed using MTH tuning. I have a MCSa and am considering the MTH tuneup files to tweak my MINI. Fuel efficiency is a high priority for me.

While I do realize that my driving makes all the difference, I would like to know if any MTH users have noticed how the MTH files have affected their fuel mileage.

Between the Standard and the Tuner file, if driving pattern is the same, which file will produce a more fuel efficient result?

If the Tuner file produces a bit more fuel hungry MINI than the Standard, I would like to know that. I would also like to know if either or both of the files will be more or less fuel efficient than the stock settings I have now.

Does anyone know how the three compare for fuel mileage in city and on highway(Stock, Standard, & Tuner)?

Have they ever been tested side by side for fuel mileage?

Thanks

After installing the original MTH file my Mini used about 2 litres per hundred kilometers more. Not sure about the tuner file yet.

I never tested stock against them, but standard and tuner give the same overall results for me, taking it easy. I don't pay attention to mpg when I hammer it.

Im not trying to be mean but why do you care how much gas milage you get......Your racing the car with performance products which we all know decreases gas milage. ( by how much i dont know ) so you can beat the hell out of it to make it faster....the last thing you should be caring about is gas milage. The faster you go the less milage you will get.

MTH will give you better gas mileage*. It leans out the AF mixture to be less rich (MINI's run pig rich normally). Better A/F ratio, better gas mileage, and better performance.

*assuming you can keep your gas pedal off the floor.

Thats what im saying.....Nobody who puts performance parts in there car is goin to feather the gas pedeal when they drive ( hence the need not to care about gas milage ) .

I'm afraid that is theory and not reality:smile:

And yes I do care about gas mileage, fair enough if your sticking the boot into it, you expect the extra performance to decrease your economy, but when nursing the car and driving civilized the MTH still costs me 2 litres per hundred K's.

I'm speaking from experience. My mpg went up when I put MTH on. Went from 29mpg (based on miles between fillups / gallons at fillup) to 33mpg (mix of city and highway). Recently I've been getting 25mpg, but I was also stomping the gas and having a grand ol' time.

There are other things to consider as well. MPG is affected by a whole range of things. A/C, Heat, Humidity, Elevation, Quality of Fuel, etc. I was getting much better gas mileage before it got up to 90+/100% here in Houston. Just because you put MTH on and then summer rolls around, does not mean the MTH cost you your mileage, summer heat / humidity and AC would bring your mpg down MTH or not.

Driving at highway legal speeds plus a little over say around 70MPH I get between 32 and 34 MPG on all my trips using the tuner file, around town I get 28 mpg and thats good enough. Now once I get to the track its all the way down to 7 mpg and I am all the way

Why care about gas mileage?

I care about gas mileage because this is my daily driving car and gas is expensive. Duh!
Not everyone who buys a fast car intends to race it.

I am also speaking from experience, and its not a weather/climate issue either. I went the other way and put the MTH in just before winter and my economy got worse from the first tank and has stayed like that. I have no hesitation in saying it would go back to the original milage with the original software. I'm not complaining about the fact, just being honest to Ezirider who posed the question.

Not true, & not everyone who puts performance enhancements on their car races or "hammers" the car. Some of us want to obtain increased drivability all the time, & optimal performance when we want it. We still care about the fuel efficiency of the car, and even take some satisfaction out of achieving the best balance between performance & economy.

Just my personal experience....

I drive an 05 S with nothing else than the tuner file fitted.

Standard car
normal driving town/highways 9,4 l/100km
top speed autobahn 220 km/h and faster 21,5 l/100km
Done about 6000 km with standard car

with standard file
normal driving town/highways 8,6 l/100km
top speed autobahn 220 km/h and faster 20 l/100km
Done about 4000 km with standard file

with tuner file
normal driving town/highways 8,6 l/100km
top speed autobahn 230 km/h and faster 18,5 l/100km
Done about 8000 km with tuner file

My absolut lowest fuel consumption (with tuner file) was 6.3 l/100km. That was a 600km trip with constant 120 - 130 km/h. It can be done but that is not what I bought an S for .

A 996 is fast a Mini is not

Volker my best ever consumption was 5.7ltr/100 on a trip and the average of the car over a 9 month period was 7.4/100. STOCK

With Standard MTH best ever was 7.3ltr/100 on a trip and average over a couple of months 9.2ltr/100

Only had the tuner file installed for 1 day and my supercharger blew, so I wont have figures on it for a few weeks.

To be honest I dont really know, I am in the process of pulling it apart to do a proper inspection. All I know is it is going to be ugly if the smashing/busting metal sounds are anything to go bye!!!!

as stated in the FAQ thread, my overall fuel consumption with MTH and with the new v42.1 OEM flash has remained the same at 21.9 MPG.

So, what did you get before? I have a 15% pullied S and I am lucky to get 28 on the highway. That is between 75-80 though so that might be the difference.

Gas mileage takes a nosedive after you break the 65-70 point. At 95, flat stretch, Cruise, I get 22-24 by the OBC. Same scenario at 65, I get 40 by the OBC.

I had the standard MTH file for about 1 year, and now the tuner file for 2 months. No difference in gas mileage between stock, standard and tuner files, about 31 MPG overall. However, you can really feel a difference going from stock to standard MTH then to Tuner. The standard MTH is a great upgrade, smooths out the power delivery, the Tuner is even better. Can't go wrong with either one.

Regards,

retroom

I have an 05 MCS with an Alta CAI....There's a promini 15% pulley sitting on my desk at home, waiting for my MTH map to arrive....

At the moment I get about 9l/100km around town...

last week I drove 655km on 98RON (with 30km left on the range....but I didn't trust it ) on the highway....

From my dyno plot, it was evident that as soon as the SC starts adding effective boost, the AF ratio gets messy and drops very low...

The tech running the dyno pointed out that such a rich ratio was probably robbing the car of power.

In very simple terms, does the MTH tuner file usually fix this problem? So if I'm cruising at say, 3000rpm, and I'm in the 'boost band', I'm not going to be spitting un-burnt fuel out of my exhaust pipes...?

Following on from that rationale (if my thinking isn't wrong), I would guess that running MTH would give slightly improved milage on the highway...

First up, I'm going to put on the MTH with just the Alta CAI, and see what happens to the milage...then I'm going to put on the 15% pulley and see how rich the car runs for a week (more air - more fuel - lower milage?)....then put on the MTH and have another go...I'll throw up my findings when It's all done...
